Did Garrett's OT decision cost him more than just the game?

Jason Garrett's decision to punt rather than go for it on 4th-and-1 last night is drawing heavy criticism today. The overtime loss to the Houston Texans has put the Cowboys head coach in the crosshairs perhaps more than ever before, and even his owner and quarterback have had their say.

Now, let's look at what Jerry Jones and Dak Prescott have had to say about the head coach's decision. What do these comments tells us about Garrett's support and job security as of today?

"Yeah, it was a long one," he said after the game. "You know, we had a 3rd-and-2 and we didn't make much on it and we just felt like at that point in the game, the way our defense was playing, the idea was to pin them down there."

But for a neutral observation let’s go to reigning NFL Man of the Year J.J. Watt for his thoughts on that decision:


“In this league, it’s almost damned if you do, damned if you don’t. You look at last week, (Indy coach Frank Reich) goes for it on fourth down and gets crushed (when the Texans stopped the play, leading to their game-winning overtime field goal). Now this week, they punted on fourth down, and I’m sure people are going to ask why he did that.

Zeke had 20 carries for a grand total of 54 yards. Of those 20 carries, 13 went for a grand total of 0 yards, and 10 of those 13 went for minus-6 yards, thanks to some cohort Bill Jones math. Your confidence level.

I saw an article that claimed since teh beginning of last season teams have had a 4th and inside the opponents territory 52 times and only punted 12 times. Garrett is the only coach in the league to have punted twice.

Zeke had 20 carries for a grand total of 54 yards. Of those 20 carries, 13 went for a grand total of 0 yards, and 10 of those 13 went for minus-6 yards, thanks to some cohort Bill Jones math. Your confidence level.

I am sure they have a lot of plays to get one yard they could have tried. The point is,there was not much to gain, if anything, by punting. People who say the defense was playing well should look at the stats a second time. The Texans had 5 trips inside the 10 yard line. The Texans had over 400 yards in regulation. The defense played well near the goal line but they gave up a lot of yards. In that situation, if the Cowboys punted, all the Texans needed to do was get into FG range and the game was over. If the Cowboys were leading by 5 and the Texans needed a TD to win, Garrett's strategy might have been more sound. But needing only a FG, it was better to try for the first down and try to win the game with a 1 yard play.

Collinsworth mentioned that Texans DLinemen were jumpy and they told him they were willing to take an offside penalty and stay aggressive.

Even if the Cowboys were going to punt it on 4th and 1, why didn't they just try to fake a play there and try to draw them offsides? Even if they get a delay of game penalty, it won't matter. It even may have helped with the punt with extra 5 yards to work with.

These are little thing JG sucks at.

I guess its a good thing JJ Watt isn't a head coach. Indy was at their own 43 with 4 yard to go. Dallas was at the opponents 42 with 1 yard to go. Completely different scenarios, and outcome probabilities.

Garrett is dumb, but I don't think in any situation would someone defer the OT kickoff. You don't receive the ball to make a statement, you receive the ball because you have to.
