Stephen Jones discussed all of the Cowboys’ off-season moves to date, and looked forward to the draft:

Jones put his thumb and forefinger maybe an inch apart to explain the differences the coaching staff explained to him between defensive ends Chris Canty and Igor Olshansky.

The Cowboys lost Canty in free agency and signed Olshansky as his replacement. Jones would not say Olshansky would start, but it’s expected he will.

The team got no takers on trading safety Roy Williams.

"With what we are trying to do with our safeties he didn’t fit," Jones said.

The addition of free agent safety Gerald Sensabaugh on Tuesday means the Cowboys will likely not move Orlando Scandrick to safety.

Jones said the team plans to move Alan Ball from corner to safety.

Jones said the team wants to address the safety position as well as linebackers, quarterback and reserve offensive linemen in the draft.

All sounds good. Wish he would cut Ellis....and stop signing thugs to the team.

I hope their approach to OL and QB position has improved...they have sucked in the draft over the past 12 years in these areas. I was hoping that Reeves would have had a loud voice in this area (he did a very good job in Denver). Now it seems the same three stooges will try yet again in this area....:(

I have a feeling Beckwith may be gone before we pick. I hope not. I just have a feeling he won't get passed up 50 times. 35-40? Yeah, I could see that. After that I have a feeling we'll have to cough up a pick to get him. Possibly in the 43-48 range.

I just wish they would explore replacement options first!

Then they can gladly move Ellis with my blessing!

I think there a couple of good candidates in the 4th and 5th rounds who would fill in nicely at ILB.

In fact, in the Draft Zone, there is a sticky discussing the college players we've shown interest in (including Beckwith).

Yes, moving 3rd and 6th stringers to various positions really tells us a ton about our draft motives.

I wonder why NT wasn't mentioned, unless Jerry is blowing smoke.

Sounds like it might be later rounds before we look at o-line.

hey rockytop thats a good point about the NT, maybe thats the way they want to go, not give that away;

and if ron brace is there at 51 they take him, personally id rather have duke robinson; i think he has all pro written all over him and be a stud offensive guard for years;

and then we could take sammie hill in the 4th to 5th round and get a good nt, thats alittle bigger than ratliff and rest ratliff some

I wondered about the NT talk too. Add to that the mention of Marcus Dixon being someone who might be able to get in the rotation next year, and I wonder if they are going to think about moving one of the DEs to NT again?

I can't imagine who they would try that with, if not Spears? But most 3-4 teams only keep 6 DL. And that Dixon talk may only be talk...

But you already had 5: Ratliff, Spears, Olshansky, Hatcher, and Bowen. How can Dixon really be an option for that final spot?

Which Draft prospects are a good NT prospect for us that we can get in our rounds?

FWIW -- probably nothing -- someone was pointing out that Ratliff is now listed as a DE on the new roster at Dallascowboys.com.

IIRC the only NTs listed are Tim Anderson and Junior Siavii.

So now that we have a starting QB and the veteran backup, we draft a QB and even if they impress, we will probably try to sneak them on our practice squad where he'll get plucked by another team. What happened to developing Bollinger?

I think we will carry 3 QBs.

Kitna most probably replaces Bollinger.

So,

Romo
Kitna, and
Draft pick we groom to replace Kitna in 2 years.

if they stay put at 51, they will take BPA at any position othher than RB QB or TE.

I think that's very accurate.

If a player they had highly-regarded falls to #51, I think this team now has the flexibility to take him and be happy about it.

Say Sean Smith is there at #51? I think they'll take him.

If Florida's Percy Harvin were to slide, I think they'd make a move to take him.

If USC's Rey Maualuga were to slip, the Cowboys are in position to trade up to get him.

Not suggesting one of this will happen, only that they could happen.

It seems every year that at least one "sure first rounder" slides into the second round.

It's advantage that the Cowboys don't have a desperate need and can let the draft come to them.

But it sure makes it tough to come up with a mock draft!
