I would not part ways with Pickens. If you cannot maximize what his talents offer this team..then you hired the wrong head coach.

The decision to tag him must be made by March 4. If he’s not signed to a deal by then it’s tag him or he is a free agent. Once he’s tagged his agent enters the scenario and has a degree of control. No team is going to trade for him without a deal in place. That puts Mulugheta front and center. The Cowboys can’t simply trade him until Pickens (Mulugheta) signs the tag. They won’t do that until they get the deal they want. If it gets to July 16, Pickens and the Cowboys are stuck with one another for the 2026 season. At that point he can’t be signed by the Cowboys or traded.

He plays on the tag…for good money. Not terrible for Pickens. A $28 million cap hit for the Cowboys. Not great for Jerry.
