Did we pass on any FS in the draft to get Carp?

I don't claim to remember who was available at that spot, but in light of the fact that FS is still a problem, who was still on the board?

Folks have talked about passing on OL guys, but right now, you could argue that FS was the most pressing need ( even though the OL has problems).

Roy is being asked to play too far from the LOS to help in coverage, and we all know how that is going. If we had better FS play, assuming a rookie first round pick could give us that, maybe Roy and the entire D would be better.

Just food for thought for idle minds.

Even though FS is a glaring need, I am still totally against drafting based on biggest need, that's when you reach for players. Best Player Available......which I don't think Carpenter was either, but I hate drafting for need, that's when you end up with the Shante Carver's and David LaFleur's of the world in the 1st round.........any FS that was available at 18 would've been a reach.

You should fill needs in FA, in the draft it is about BPA.

I agree, it has to be BPA in the draft. But with that in mind, I'm sure there were several players bunched together in ratings ... Carpenter, Fasano, Green weren't the best of picks.

There were players out there who were equally rated and could have contributed more than these guys have.

No reaching either!!!

Unfortunately, it is always easy to look back on the draft and wish....what if?

look we need a FS more than anything else on this team right now...the passrush may take care of itself with hatcher, ratliff, and carp getting stronger, quicker and smarter...the upside is there..and with ellis coming back..but i wouldnt base my whole season on watkins getting better...get a freakin REAL fs in here...why is that so hard? why cant bill see this? trade,,,do what you have to! we should have paid sharper a few years back

I say if you want to draft a free safety. Don't! Draft the best overall CB that has size and make him a free safety. Otherwise, look to FA, but it's going to cost you!

Sure, first round CB prospects just LOVE the idea of moving to FS. A move that, even if they perform very well, will likely end up losing them millions of dollars over the course of their careers. You can be pretty damn sure that you'll have that player and his agent tell the team not to draft him.

passing on Maroney was the mistake

Maroney. 4.0 YPC

Julius. 4.2 YPC

MBIII. 5.1 YPC

How is Maroney better now?

Sheesh, because he's not Carp.

I think we are OK in the running game...we do not dominate folks because our OL is only average. We will need a OG and OT very soon.

But, we must upgrade the FS spot. Shame we did not do that with the draft or FA.

Actually we would've been better off taking Davin Joseph or Nick Mangold..........they both went in the 1st after we took Carp and they both filled a bigger need, without being reaches......both are starters for their teams.

Well, if he doesn't have the skill to play CB, then he doesn't have the skill to play CB. See, there aren't many large CBs in the league, because most of them don't have the quickness because of their size. Chances are, if you draft a CB in the first round, he will be to play CB. If he doesn't have the quickness to start at CB, then he becomes a safety.

I doubt Mangold is as good as Gurode has been; Gurode is bigger and stronger as well.

Or acquire/draft a CB and move Henry over.

I have jumped on the "Roy Williams needs to move to LB" bandwagon. He'd probably be a monster there. He could be used very creatively there.

So, IMO, the Cowboys need a SS too.

I know that it takes the fun away, but most Draft Analysts thought that Carp would be a good fit in the 3-4 scheme. If memory serves, Kiper thought it was a good fit (memory doesn't always serve, though).

Can we give Watkins some time before we declare him a bust as well ???

As you've described the player, he wouldn't be a first round pick.

Well, a guy I knew about was a guy by the name of Danieal Manning out of Abilene Christian. Most thought he would be a 3rd round pick and he was recruited out of college by some big schools like Nebraska, but for some reason went to ACU.

Chicago took him in the 2nd round and he is now starting due to injury at FS. The Chicago Pass Rush probably has gotten him exposed as much as he would say on ....the Cowboys.

But to get him we would have had to use our 1st Pick though.
