Did You Have a Favorite Cowboy Who Wasn't a Star?

I had a bunch...but Dixon Edwards was one...he wasnt a star, but he was a dependable OLB who made a few big plays...one in particular was vs SF when he knocked Ricky Waters what must have been 8-10 yds backwards in the NFC Championship game. The following week the team was in Atlanta for the Super Bowl, and we went to the team hotel a few nights to get autographs etc etc. Me and a friend of mine spotted Edwards and told him what an awesome hit he put on Waters, and he seemed genuinely suprised anyone knew who he was. We talked to him for a few minutes and him, Darrin Smith and a couple other guys signed a mini helmet for me.

Another would be Chad Hennings...what a great story he was

Funny, but I thought of Dixon Edwards before I thought of Brock Marion. I liked both of them. I guess during that era of my memory, we had alot of good role players

Tony Hill was my man, when I first became a Dallas fan

I gotta include Kenny Gant too, I used to hit the shark dance after a good hit in Boys and Girls Club football

Last and probably least Paul Palmer.. LOL I don't know why but he was my favorite player during that 1-15 season

Chad Hennings is definitely one of the players I considered naming because of his service in the Air Force and just the class act he is.

He was stationed here in Tucson at Davis Monthan AFB and a couple of friends of mine met him. They told me he was so nice to them.

He will most likely always be known as the biggest Fighter Pilot in USAF History. He flew an A-10 Warthog in Desert Storm and was finally allowed to play football a year earlier than his military stint would normally allow because he was simply too big for the plane.

Newhouse, Bates and Moose are the first to come to mind.

My wife would probably say Moose doesn't fit in to this category. She thinks he was the team. :laugh2:

I gotta go with Preston Pearson...the guy was truly CLUTCH and i think the best 3rd down back EVER

Larry Cole.
All of the Zero Club members would be great candidates. I loved Cole's quote after scoring the 2nd TD of his career, a 10 year gap between the first and 2nd one.

"I had an off decade."

Alvin Harper. What isn't to love. He was great for us and stunk it up for the Bucs and Deadskins.

Oh...and Walt Garrison.

Don Meredith: "The great thing about Walt Garrison is that if you need three yards, he'll get you three yards...and if you need 20 yards, he'll get you three yards"

:)

I have a brother and nephew who are USAFA grads, so I too was partial to Hennings. Larry Cole, another fave, was thrown out of the Academy for cheating in 1968. But he was "rewarded" by transferring to Hawaii.

I would say making the ProBowl would make one count as a star, so many of the above mentioned would not qualify, I used to pretend I was Michael Downs and Everson Walls, their being UFA coming in together just had me daydreaming about walking on...

David and Hos mentioned Chad Hennings. He was one of my favorites too. I had a chance to talk to the guy and he's the real deal.

He was a PR gem. He played Bob Lilly's position. Had Roger Staubach's military background and had Tom Landry's classic jaw line. He grew up on a farm, raised cattle and corn. He went to church. He mentored young people. He was a pilot. He was a gentleman.

Hennings was pretty close to being a super hero.

Tony Hill and James Washington were also mentioned and I really like both of those guys.

Tony Hill was a star.

I too liked Robert Newhouse, Timmy Newsome and Kenny Gant.

I even liked Larry Brown during his first three years in the league. He came in as a 12th round draft choice and worked very hard. He won a team award for best off season improvement between his rookie and second year. The guy did what he had to do to improve himself and help his team win. He worked on his techniques and the coaches considered him better at technique than Kevin Smith. After his third season and being a part of two Superbowl championships his attitude seemed to change. He didn't look like the same player. I think he forgot how he got to where he was at in the NFL. I didn't like him at the point, but he still managed to help the team win a third SB before completely falling apart. Fortunately, that occurred while he was a Raider. He looked out of shape and disinterested at that time.

Bill Bates and George Teague

Bill Bates has already been talked about.

George. Well, defending the Star from T.O. was classic enough for me. He was a steady player, and had the heart of a Lion. When noone else was doing anything about T.O.'s antics, George took it upon himself to be the lawmaker. Well done George, and thank you.
