DL Snaps going forward

IMO its a lock to be Armstrong, at least for the near future.

Armstrong is injured. I don't know to what extent.

Armstrong %Snaps (Blue for games with Quinn Active)
G# ............ Pct ............ Opp
1 ............ 42.6% ............ NYG
2 ............ 64.4% ............ WAS
3 ............ 27.1% ............ MIA
4 ............ 22.9% ............ NOR
5 ............ 25.0% ............ GNB
6 ............ 11.7% ............ NYJ

Hill %Snaps
G#
............ Pct ............ Opp
3 ............ 48.6% ............ MIA
4 ............ 38.6% ............ NOR
5 ............ 15.3% ............ GNB
7 ............ 21.3% ............ PHI

IMO, Bennett will give us much better reps at RDE than Crawford did and equal reps to what Crawford gave us at 3Tech.

Either Hill or Armstrong will be active.

They always have 8 DL active.

The 8th DL usually plays some amount of snaps.

DT game actives
Covington all
Collins all
Woods 1,2,6,7
Crawford 1,2,5,6
Hill played games 3,4,5,7.

Lawrence all
Quinn 3,4,5,6,7
Hyder all
Armstrong all but 7 (listed lp wednesday on injury report for 7)
Jackson 1,2,3,4,7

They've been going with 8. We've got 10 guys. 2 guys out each game.

Hill didn't play when all DTs were healthy, played 40% when 2 were out, 20% when 1 was out.

As Jerry says, Bennett is replacing Crawford. He's healthy. All the other DTs are healthy. I don't see Hill playing.

Armstrong was injured early game 6, and didn't play game 7.

The only game with everyone healthy going into the game was game 6, when Hill and Jackson both sat. I expect the same going forward.

Hill and Hyder were reverses at the very bottom.

Here is the corrected version:

Let's make it simple.

Assume 60% total for Bennett with 30% DE and 30% DT.

The top 2 DEs, top 3 DTs plus Bennett:
DE
DLaw ............... 70%
Quinn ............... 70%
Bennett ............ 30%
Sub Total ........ 170.00%

DT
Collins ............. 60%
Woods ............. 60%
Covington ........ 30%
Bennett ............ 30%
DT Snaps ........ 180%

Then either Armstrong (DE) or Hill (DT) will be the 8th DL and Hyder plays DE/DT snaps based on which one.

Giving the 8th DL 20% of snaps leaves 30% total for Hyder.

With Armstrong Active:
DE
Armstrong ..... 20%
Hyder ............ 10%
Total ................. 30%

DT
Hill ............ 0%

As I said in a previous post, Hyder's DE/DT position flex makes the issue between Armstrong or Hill being active a minimal issue.

That's in addition to the position flex of Bennett.

Crawford was limited all season which skews the 2019 snap data.
- Crawford played about 31% of the snaps in each of the final 3 games he played (44% in game 1).
- Bennett will likely play double that amount.

If Armstrong is not 100% in the next game, they'll probably have Hill active.

Regards of whether it's Armstrong or Hill, the 8th active DL will likely play less than 20% of the snaps.

We have 10. Hill and Jackson are 9 and 10, one DT, one DE. They're the bubble in case of injury.

Armstrong has always played if he was healthy.

Bennett and Crawford (DE & DT snaps)
  • Bennett has played more snaps in his career at DE, than a DT.
  • Crawford in the 4-3 defense, has played more at DT, than at DE.
  • That fits with their sizes:
    • Bennett 6-4, 275
    • Crawford 6-4, 290
It's difficult to know exactly what they would have done if everyone was available.

These 4 were never all available for the same game:
  • Quinn
  • Crawford
  • Woods
  • Armstrong

Did you do all that by hand, or can you scrape/api Pro Football Reference?

"These 4..."
See your chart. Quinn, Crawford, Woods, and Armstrong. all played game 6. Only Jackson and Hill didn't play game 6.

When everyone was healthy, Jackson and Hill didn't play. I expect the same going forward.

The weights on the Cowboys' site are notoriously iffy. In the last week I had heard on one of their radio shows someone said Crawford was in his 270s.

Our biggest hole is nickel DT. We only have 1 decent one with Collins. That's where it makes sense to play Bennett. Obviously, there is no guarantee they will do what makes sense. Bennett may be our best option run defender at RDE too, but they've always prioritized pass rush over run defense, and the dropoff for RDT pass rush is greater than the dropoff for RDE run defense.

Crawford said last season that he was at 290.

He was injured during the preseason and players like him lose weight when they can't lift heavy.

Quinn - Collins - Bennett - DLaw

This trade only works if that group is more effective. Bennett isn't a good enough edge player to make much of a difference if he plays a lot of snaps there, but he should win a lot of 1-1 passrush battles on the inside.

Our need was more pass rush inside. Crawford was injured and we had no one else as a legitimate inside pass rusher besides Collins. More effective than what we had is a pretty low hurdle to clear.

The Cowboys have one of the best pass rushes in the entire league...so the bar is set pretty high.
