DL troubles again

Ur saying crawford was abused by the rams and colts. And so was Lawrence. You cant cherry pick which players fit your argument of the moment.

How about we "cherry pick" between Pro Bowlers and overpaid rotation players?

Just when you thought we were on the right road you're one-two years behInd again.

I say we need a more flexible DL with the ability to play two gaps so a run stuffer, another edge, and DE. You can get a 0, 1 and 5 R3-4 and an Edge R2. You have some on board who may be a 5 and two-three 1s.

There are 6-10 FAs at the edge rusher available.

Your thoughts?
Considering our relatively-weak draft situation for 2019, we need to be somewhat aggressive and/or creative in trading and FA.

We have to come up with a term for the opposite of "Pet Cat".

Pet Rat?

It has a nice ring to it, but Crawford deserves better. I don't hate the guy, I hate that he's overpaid and miscast.

But I get a kick out of fans talking about him being this team's starting RDE. Want to know how many sacks their 'starting RDE' got against starting left tackles in 2017? I'll give you a hint, it rhymes with 'hero' which is how those same people want to view him.

So if that few sacks is 'OK' with those folks, I'll say it's not OK with me.

Marinelli and/or Richard will never play a two-gap defense.

Not call it that but he he plays more SPs than any thing. He's stated in the past he'd prefer to play more of a Seattle type D if he had the players.

I consider Crawford to be a good rotational guy at all the spots, not a guy who is going to excel at any one spot. He isn't a RDE for sure, he is more of an LDE or a 3T depending on the opponent.

But there is a value in a guy like that, its like a quality 6th Man in Basketball or the long man/spot starter in baseball. Its not a star, its not really a starter - but there is real value in having the guy.

AND YES I KNOW YOU DISAGREE.

I agree, he's better at LDE or 3T. Lining him up at RDE is a disservice to both him and the team.

No, I DO AGREE. There IS value. But it's 'Jack Crawford value', at $3 million a year, not $9 million.

That's what I would prefer to change more than chasing the guy away.

Very good chance you get your wish this offseason.

I like Crawford - he is a good rotational guy and is great for depth across the D-Line - but that contract was a head scratcher at the time, and still is.

Crawford has played more LDE snaps in his career than RDE. And in games 2 - 7 of the season, most of his snaps were at DT.
OK now i think you need to go and look at the snap counts of Maliek Collins and Caraun Reid

in weeks 2-7

Crawford, Collins, Reid are the 3techs

Reid played an avg of 24.3% of the snaps and you know this because he doesnt play thr 1 tech
Collins played an avg of 53.5% in them games. But i know he plays 1tech too. But between Woods and Ross they played 91% of the snaps in them games.

So in them games Reid and Collins played an avg of roughly 69-70% of the snaps.

so really was Crawford getting alot of snaps at DT? Or was he splitting snaps at RDE,LDE, and 3tech?

Telling you my dude, ill break down your stats and prove you wrong every time.

I expect us to add a DE either through FA or the draft. Free agency may be tough, a guy with Gregory numbers probably cost 14-15 mil a year
I expect a DT in FA or the draft. A DT may be easier to get in FA than a DE, especially a true 1 tech

I don't think its the end of the world. Irving was already gone and I was assuming Gregory would start at RDE next year but there was no guarantee he would be more than a pass rush specialist, something can and likely will Armstrong can step up to.

The net effect is more reps to Crawford at DE and more pressure on Taco and Armstrong to peform.

We went from (hopefully) this if Gregory grabbed the starting spot:

LDE - DLaw, Armstrong
1T - Collins, Woods
3T - Free Agent, 2nd round pick
RDE - Gregory, Taco, Crawford

to this:

LDE - DLaw, Crawford
1T - Collins, Woods
3T - Free Agent, 2nd round pick
RDE - Taco, Armstrong

Gregory has a much higher upside but we needed development from Taco and Armstrong also. And it is likely we will get it from both guys - especially Armstrong.

Maliek Collins needs to go back to 3-Tech were he excelled and got 5 sacks from his rookie year. And that’s assuming he can play 16 games which to my knowledge he never has here.

So we need a 1-Tech, 3-Tech, and another DE...

.

I wouldn't mind that at all, I think its a better position for him but he has been at 1T out of need. All of our DL (except Woods) play multiple positions to I think the talent we get is more important than tying the player to specific position.
