I'm going to use 11 as the number they keep for purpose of this thread.

I'm not going to list UDFAs for now.

DT options
Collins
Irving
Price
Datone Jones
Jihad Ward
Ash
Daniel Ross
Joe Vellano
Crawford

D-End Options
DLaw
Crawford
Taco
Armstrong
Ealy
Tapper
Gregory
Jihad Ward - Played some DE when Marinelli coached the Senior Bowl.

Weights are estimates based on player statements or reports. The roster is rarely correct.

Guess on the 8 active for game 1:

Collins 6-2, 310
Irving 6-7 290
Price 6-3, 310
Datone Jones 6-5, 300

DLaw 6-3, 270
Taco 6-6, 275
Crawford 6-4, 290
Ealy 6-4, 275

Keep 3 from this group:

Armstrong 6-4, 257 (Likely makes the team)
Gregory 6-5, 250 (Likely makes the team if available)
Tapper 6-2, 270 (Unknown ability, injury risk)
Jihad Ward 6-3, 295 (DT or possibly DE)
Ash 6-3, 333
Daniel Ross 6-2, 300
Joe Vellano 6-4, 325

If Taco wins the starting RDE spot do they keep Crawford at 6M? Crawford was solid last year, is above average against the run at DE and has been a captain. What is the delta (difference) in ability between for Ealy vs Crawford?

Ealy's total total pay is 1.25M (250K is incentives) with 200K guaranteed.

Datone Jones salary is 790K with nothing guaranteed.

Jihad Ward - 950K, nothing guaranteed.

Proven ability but limited upsides:

Crawford
Datone Jones
Ealy
Price

Unproven but possible High upsides:
Armstrong
Gregory
Tapper
Jihad Ward

In my scenario it seems like a final spot could be between Ward or Tapper unless a big guy like Ash plays really well in the preseason.

As of now I'm thinking they're hoping Ward is active over someone like Datone Jones.

DT:
Irving
Ward
Collins
Price

DE:
DLaw
Taco
Ealy
Crawford

Then Gregory, Armstrong and one other.

Ealy also has the build we seem to like for our 3Techs so that does offer some flexibility.

Armstrong, Taco, Irving, Lawrence, Crawford, Collins, and Price are locks.

Think itll come down to one of Jones or Ward at DT,
And two of Gregory, Tapper and Ealy that make the 53.

11 might be optimistic.

DLaw
Taco
Crawford
Ealy
Armstrong

Irving
Collins
Ward
Price

Early favorite to be inactive would be Armstrong.

10th and 2nd inactive spot is between Datone Jones and Tapper. I’d lean towards Jones

Datone Jones can play 1tech. He might even compete to start at 1tech.

This is probably the best i've felt about the Cowboys Dline going into a season in about 5 years. I'm just not sure if i mean that in a good way or a bad way....

Ash is the elephant in the room at 333. That's great but Marinelli doesn't seem to want big DTS. Could be booted at not the cookie cutter Marinelli wants.

Ealy is a well known name but hasn't been very good lately. Jihad Ward is a name people recognize but not a big producer. Neither of these guys are locks.

I think there are very few true "locks" for very different reasons:

Lawrence is the stud of the group, but would they trade him if the young guys can give 80 percent of what he brings to the table? IDK. It's just good for thought.

Irving. Another great talent, but he's trouble and could get suspended. Talent wise he's a lock. Otherwise--not so much.

Collins. 2016 --a lock. 2017 play? Not so much. Could be a surprise cut.

Crawford. Swiss Army knife, but expensive. Good at everything exceptional at nothing. Cost and contract are the biggest variables.

Taco. As much as it pains me to say it Taco is probably the safest DL on the roster due to age, contract and draft position. Hopefully he will justify his draft position.

I think Gregory will probably not make the roster even if he is reinstated. Out of football too long and ten cent mind. Doubtful he is in football shape. I think the only way he sticks is with a roster exemption.

If healthy, Tapper could be a real pleasant surprise but injuries have his spot surely in jeopardy.

Armstrong. Likely makes the roster based on draft position, but every once in a while a high draft choice gets cut.

Price was playing ok pre injury. A wild card.

In short--- who knows what they will do. Very unpredictable.

XWalker good post.
What DAL may do:
DE: DLaw, Taco, Ealy, TyCraw (Armstrong)
DT: Price, Irving, Collins, Jones (Ward)

What I would do:
DE: DLaw, Taco, Ealy, Armstrong (Tapper)
DT: Price, Irving, Collins, Jones (Osbourne)

If Gregory gets back Ealy is released.

I say DAL carries 10 DL at most.

Crawford is a guy that doesn’t show up on the stats sheet much but does a lot of dirty work that helps the other DL & LBs make plays. Maybe overpaid a bit but valuable to that Defense

vs WAS, he essentially took on 2 guys and let David Irving loop around and put a big hit on Kirk Cousins.

Man this defense, Lawrence was just a moster last year, people better pray irving doesnt playall 16 games

Ealy and Jones are stopgaps IMO. Players we acquired just in case we didn't get anyone better. I think both stand a chance of not making the roster. If Ward looks like he did in Oakland, the same might can be said for him.

I think Lawrence, Collins, Irving, Crawford, Price, Charlton and Armstrong are locks for various reasons. If reinstated, Gregory might be close to a lock.

So two more spots to be decided among Ealy, Jones, Ward, Tapper and Ash. If Tapper is healthy, I lean his direction and I think Ward has more potential than the others. Although I list Armstrong as a lock because of spending a fourth-rounder on him, if he can't play then also slide either Ealy or Jones onto the roster.

If more than 10 players prove to be worthy of this roster, then we've got a great problem on our hands since normally we don't even had 10 who are really worthy.

i have no idea why you think Price is limited upside. He is going into year 3, had no playing time until last year, and flashed in both the run and pass defense when given a shot. He is still raw in technique. Let us see if he can develop more before capping him.

Jones has done nothing much in hes 7 years in the league. I don't see him making the squad much less active on game days.

Locks:
DLaw, Irving, Taco, Collins

Inside track to a spot:
Crawford, Price, Ward, Armstrong, Ash

Bubble: Tapper, Gregory, Ealy, Jones

My guess is we keep the first 9 listed. Last four are competing for maybe one spot.

Crawford better be careful. If he isn't a noticeable upgrade over a few of those guys he will be out the door just because of his deal. In a NY minute.

We have to eat 7 mill and only save 1.8 if hes released. Next year we can get out of it and save 5.9 mill while eating only 4.2, not optimal but small in the big scheme of things. Hes definitely not a lock next year.

This year, I dont think anyone vying for one of the last spots is going to beat him out so not much to worry about
