Shortly after the close of the draft, both the Houston Texans and the Dallas Cowboys were suddenly on the line. Houston was making a big play for him, but their receiving corps was stacked. Dallas’ wasn’t, and that’s why Cole signed with the Cowboys as a free agent. Before he knew it, he was off to training camp in Oxnard, California, living out his boyhood fantasy. After only a few days, though, Danette received an unexpected call. It was Cole. He said he was leaving camp and flying back to Dallas. Something, he told her, just didn’t feel right.

Haven't read the story either, however, I remember when Beasley left training camp intending to quit football. I remember JG/JJ trying to talk him back and there were people (many or few) that were done with Beasley, and justifiably so. Fortunately, the Cowboys were patient with Cole and let him work through his issues. It's probably the best example of why JG/JJ never close the door on anything and always leave their options open. Even when a UDFA think he's done with football.
