Afternoon practice observations: Mike Mickens came up limping

Tim MacMahon

*Seventh-round CB Mike Mickens, who had to pull out of the Senior Bowl and skip the combine due to a left knee injury, came up limping after undrafted WR Kevin Ogletree beat him on a comeback route late in practice. Mickens waved off athletic trainer Jim Maurer and rejoined his teammate, but I didn't see him take another rep.

*Sixth-round TE John Phillips isn't a great athlete, but he has a knack for getting open. He's very precise on his cuts and is a clever route runner. Case in point: He got behind third-round ILB Jason Williams on a seam route by lulling him to sleep with a little hesitation. The pass was incomplete after Stephen McGee threw a rope, which Williams was able to deflect, instead of putting over Phillips' shoulder.

*Undrafted FB Asaph Schwapp got behind Williams on a wheel route. As LB coach Reggie Herring said this morning, Williams is raw.

*Hall of Famer Michael Irvin watched practice and gave some tips to the receivers. Maybe he was just sizing up the competition for his reality show winner.

*Sixth-round ILB Stephen Hodge looked much better in coverage during the afternoon practice than he did this morning. He had several deflections on passes to the flat.

*TE Rodney Hannah, a two-year practice squad vet, looked good catching the ball again. He made a leaping grab over fifth-round S Mike Hamlin on a post route.

*The defensive coaches congratulated fifth-round S/CB DeAngelo Smith after he broke up a pass to Manuel Johnson. But it sure looked like defensive holding. Smith made a nice break on a slant to break up Stephen McGee's pass to undrafted WR Julian Hawkins earlier in the practice.

*The OL, DL or OLBs do technique/teaching drills all practice. Nothing competitive worth reporting.

*Still haven't seen fifth-round K David Buehler put foot on ball.

I hope he's alright.

I didn't hear anything in Wade's PC to suggest otherwise.

I still think Mickens is a good bet to start the season on the PUP list.

Given the injury he had, I really expect this guy to end up having microfracture surgery and then miss the entire year. He's a player but teams kept away from him because he is a gamble as he likely needs a relatively serious surgery to be able to play in the future

Microfracture might be a strong leap, but I do wonder if he needs another scope to remove a chip or something.

Count, I'm not sure on whose reporting to trust.

So far today, McGee has looked great vs. just o.k., Hodge has gotten abused vs. shutting down everyone, M Johnson looks out of shape vs. he's making athletic catches.

As for Mickens, it could be something very minor or maybe not . . . . Wade didn't refer to anything regarding Mickens in his PC. Not saying it is a non-event, but hopefully it's nothing to get too concerned about.

Jason Wiliams played his Senior year rushing the QB and playing around the line of scrimmage. He did more coverage his junior year. The Cowboys have seen his play on tape. He will adjust. Let's see what he looks like in September.

He will have an adjustment period for sure.

However, I expect to see Williams in the 46 sets, and I think he will compete for that nickel job.

You can play Williams down hill, too.

It likely is going to be one of those "get in there and see what he needs" issues. I think it was the cartilage tear that really had folks worried b/c that stuff doesn't heal well.

Yeah, tough to tell but he's had to pull out of stuff like this for months now. If he needs rest at the least.

Mosely's piece said Mickens was out of shape too.

I am very encouraged about what I hear about the other players though.

Sometimes they will miss a small particle of the torn cartilage that will move back into the joint at time causing inflamation. The big issue was he came back from the original surgery to play in his bowl game and it was obvious the knee wasn't fully healed. IMO the doctors didn't put his best interest by allowing him to play.

Our docs thought he would be fine - other teams likely took him off their boards... just sayin'

Co-signed... ugh, remember Napolean McCallum? If not, Google or YouTube him. If you thought Theismann's injury was nasty...... :puke:

Update says it was DeAngelo Smith, not Mickens, and that he just rolled his ankle.
