McShay takes a crack at corners

In an interesting piece over at ESPN.com, Massachusetts native Todd McShay ranks corners, not by value, but particular skill.

McShay gives Virginia Tech's Brandon Flowers the best instincts, UConn's Tyvon Branch the best closing burst, Troy's Leodis McKelvin the premier fluidity, Arizona's Antoine Cason the top ball skills and says Reggie Smith is the best in run support.

What's equally intriguing is that there's been 13.3 corners taken per year over the last three years in the first three rounds of the draft. And also McShay's ranking of teams in the greatest need at the position, which goes like this: Ravens, Saints, Cardinals, Texans, Packers.

Four of those five teams pick ahead of the Cowboys.

If Cason represents the best value at #28, then I say draft him. But if he isn't... then don't force it. This team has immediate needs for a WR, a CB and a RB. If you can't get one at a certain spot then pick up another.

DRC doesn't get the best anything? You'd think that with people claiming him to be the first CB off the board and the best in this class, he'd be he best at something.

Not possible. I was assured that I was wrong about that.

I don't want to call anyone out, but I was told that he is purely a Zone coverage CB, that he has no man to man skills despite the fact he played man to man at Arizona and won the Jim Thorpe award as the best DB in the nation.

If there is no CB value at 22, it's definitely worth trying to slide down a bit if possible, or just deal it for RW/AB (and hopefully get a little something back too on top of the player). Use 28 for Cason possibly. Then get a RB. Get Pacman. Add one other CB.

Not hardly, unless of course you were arguing, like I was, that Cason is not a 1st round lock.

I don't know who you were arguing with, but he is generally projected to be a better zone corner than man corner in the NFL. He's the guy I have the hardest time I have figuring out. Can't argue the production.

However, ball skills don't really relate to scheme. You could have good ball skills in either scheme.

OK... so now you're telling me that a corner operates totally on his own within a defense? His play is not influenced in one-iota by any of his teammates?

Some of you yahwho's just amaze me.

You grab a bag of corn chips and down a 6-pack of bud on a Saturday, and watch football till midnight and you think you're an NFL scout.

When someone pays you for your opinion, then I'll take notice. So please just scan in a copy of a check from folks buying your draft guide.
You weren't just arguing if he was a first rder but because we don't have a magazine that you subscribe to you judged our football acumen. Point is we don't have to buy a magazine to tell us what to think. Some actually watch games and breakdown film. Now I am not an expert or do I pretend to be but for a guy who admittedly says he doesn't have the time to know these things you shouldn't be so quick to knock those that do. Maybe now that Mcshay (someone who gets paid for his opinion) says what we have been telling you from day 1(that Cason is one of the best corners in the nation) you won't be so judgemental.

You're right some do watch games, break down films, go to the various all-star games-- even watch the practices. Then they go to the combine.

Some of those folks have been doing this for years and package their knowledge for resale to the folks that don't have the time nor the expertise to be doing all that.

And over time those folks have built up a certain level of credibility. Are they right all the time? No. But they are considered, outside of the official scouts themselves, to be the 2nd level of expertise when it comes to the draft.

Hopefully you never need surgery, but if you do I hope you choose a specialist to perform said surgery rather than your next door neighbor, who, while a nice guy, isn't a surgeon, even though he's watched every episode of "E.R".

And who said Cason is a JAG?

You should read all of my posts and retain the info rather than just pick & choose to what suits you.

I've said right along that Cason is a borderline 1st round pick.

You're picking him in the second round.

Go pick a fight with one of the folks that has him going at #22 or higher.

Surgery? You can't think of a better analogy than that.lol Let see if i can use a better analogy for you.
  • When you buy meat you always consult with the butcher
  • When you want sex you consult a callgirl(she is a professional)
I read mags and listen to the experts as well but I won't knock anyones opinions because they aren't considered an expert. There are guys on this board(theogt, fuzzylumpkins, dblair, hos, stasheroo, abqcowboy) who I think are just as good as the experts if not better.

So you got your nose bent out of shape.

Fair enough.
