My sleeper: Courtney Brown

A few weeks ago, Timmy Tabloid earmarked Jason Hatcher as his "Jay Ratliff" (big-time contributor emerging from obscurity) for the 2008 season.
I'm not willing to go that far with my sleeper. But I would tell you to keep an eye on Courtney Brown. Coming out of Cal Poly, he had oustanding measureables (4.32 40-yard dash, 41.5-inch vertical), but there was some question as to what position he'd play (corner or safety) and how he'd adjust to a much higher level of competition. Then, he had to fight through a torn bicep.

A year later, he's bulked a wiry frame up to 205 pounds and settled in as a safety, bringing athleticism to the position that the Cowboys haven't had in the past, and has gotten first-team reps over the last two weeks. The coaches like him and his potential seems to be high.

He was active for the Cowboys' final eight games of 2007, contributed on special teams in all of those contests, and got defensive run in the final two weeks of the regular season. From what we've seen, he's shown good aggression and instincts to the ball in two practices worth of media access. And he says part of that's a result of the experience of a year on an NFL roster.

"(The game seems) a lot slower now," Brown said."My first year, I was concentrating on myself, and where I was supposed to be. Now I can see a lot more, I can see the offense, what they're going to do when they motion, being able to see everything instead focusing just on the little things. ...

"It's a big jump, that first year, you're getting used to everything, worried about what you've got to be, what the plays are. Now that I've got a year under my belt, I'm seeing things a lot quicker and getting settled in a lot faster than I was last year."

Just take note on the kid. He might surprise you.

Interesting that he thinks he'll make a significant contribution. That would mean one of the other safeties would get hurt OR he beats out Pat Watkins -- not completely out of the picture obviously.

Hamlin's replacement?

An engineering degree should indicate that he's smart enough in addition to his athleticism. I want to see how well he tackles in preseason. ~checks calendar~

Yeah...beating out Pat Watkins shouldn't be too hard.

Hopefully there is something to Brown....

I'm really high on him. Wouldn't surprise me at all if he's Hamlin's replacement, assuming a deal can't be reached.

Both Watkins and Brown have gotten lot snaps at both safety positions in Hamlin's & RWilliams absence. As a former CB in college, Brown certainly should be pretty good in pass coverage and having bulked up to 205 he could develop into a good run stopper. However as one who loved the Watkins & the Brown picks, count me as still hoping Watkins takes big strides this season at FS while Brown makes his presence felt not only at FS but also particularly at SS. Realize that's hoping for a lot. Do like Hamlin but can't help thinking he wants so much that we need prepare for the possibility this is his last year with in Dallas. We need be prepared at FS for that. Also depending on what happens at SS, we also need be prepared there. It would save us lot of cap space if we didn't resign Hamlin but if Watkins and/or Brown aren't the answers at either safety position, we've have to use higher draft picks on at least one of those positions or find a player in FA which would cost a lot.

Anyone know if Pat Watkins bulked up? I haven't seen pics of him in the OTAs. I was hoping he would gain some muscle over the off season with the assistance of the Cowboys training staff.

This makes me feel better after we failed to draft a safety .

I'm hoping the best for Brown, but man, everyone (except Roy Williams) seem like they are Hall of Fame bound in the off-season.

I do like Brown alot. I like the pick when it happen and now that they have converted him to Safety I am really happy. I think he will get some playing time and I think they are really focusing on him backing up Roy. That would be and awesome corp of him and Hamlin back there. Both can hit and both can cover. If this kid really work hard and show what he have. This may be Roy's last year here. Unless he make a dramatic change in his coverage.

Not predicting anything but I sure hope we are developing at least one safety and best two.

Courtney Brown is a player, I think he'll be the starter in 2009...

The best kept secret on the roster.

Getting Brown in the 7th round was an absolute steal.

Unfortunately, he's playing behind a couple of prima donna's at safety right now.
