A few weeks ago, Timmy Tabloid earmarked Jason Hatcher as his "Jay Ratliff" (big-time contributor emerging from obscurity) for the 2008 season.
I'm not willing to go that far with my sleeper. But I would tell you to keep an eye on Courtney Brown. Coming out of Cal Poly, he had oustanding measureables (4.32 40-yard dash, 41.5-inch vertical), but there was some question as to what position he'd play (corner or safety) and how he'd adjust to a much higher level of competition. Then, he had to fight through a torn bicep.
A year later, he's bulked a wiry frame up to 205 pounds and settled in as a safety, bringing athleticism to the position that the Cowboys haven't had in the past, and has gotten first-team reps over the last two weeks. The coaches like him and his potential seems to be high.
He was active for the Cowboys' final eight games of 2007, contributed on special teams in all of those contests, and got defensive run in the final two weeks of the regular season. From what we've seen, he's shown good aggression and instincts to the ball in two practices worth of media access. And he says part of that's a result of the experience of a year on an NFL roster.
"(The game seems) a lot slower now," Brown said."My first year, I was concentrating on myself, and where I was supposed to be. Now I can see a lot more, I can see the offense, what they're going to do when they motion, being able to see everything instead focusing just on the little things. ...
"It's a big jump, that first year, you're getting used to everything, worried about what you've got to be, what the plays are. Now that I've got a year under my belt, I'm seeing things a lot quicker and getting settled in a lot faster than I was last year."
Just take note on the kid. He might surprise you.
