While gushing about seemingly every player on the roster at the Cowboys Kickoff Luncheon a couple weeks ago, Wade Phillips made a comment that caught me by surprise.

"One of my strengths is judging talent," Phillips said. "And I said, 'We've got a linebacker here that can't play, and we need to replace him.' I was absolutely wrong. Bradie James is one of the best players we have because of his leadership and his play. I need to go back and look at the film again because I couldn't see it, but now I do. The reason I do is because of all the intangibles and his production."

I finally got a chance to ask Bradie James about it. Turns out he was rather stunned to hear those words come out of Wade's mouth, too.

"I don't know if you want to hear that, you know what I mean?" James said when asked what ran through his mind when Wade made the comment. "He could have cut half of that part and just said, 'Yeah, I was just was wrong about that guy.' But I guess it was a good thing. I guess he's saying that I can play."

James was surprised to hear Phillips tell a packed ballroom that he didn't think James could play after studying tape of the 2006 season. But James had a feeling that Phillips wasn't too fond of him when the coach first arrived at Valley Ranch.

"It's nothing that we talked about, but I could tell when he first got here," James said. "He would talk to everybody but me. So I was like, 'Oh, he might not like me, but I don't care about that. I better go out here and make some plays.'"

James readily admits that he was a different player last season than he was in 2006. He weighed as much as 265 pounds during Bill Parcells' final season, because he was asked to "wrestle with guards" on a regular basis.

"That's not Wade's scheme at all," said James, who weighs in the low 240s now. "That's probably what it was, but I'm going to always play within the structure. That's what I did. I mean, I did what Bill asked me to do. That wasn't good enough for Wade, but Wade wasn't there yet. Whatever Wade wanted me to do, I tried to do that."

He did it well, too, which is what Wade tried to say in his own awkward way.

No, he was right. He can't play -- on 3rd downs. Particularly at 265 lbs.

Wade's first impression of James was probably more correct. Consider ILB a need for 2009 imo. In addition to a young wideout, some O-line depth since every starter will be at least 30 by the end of the season, and a young qb to groom.
All concerns for after the season since I should be concerned about right now given the season starts in 2 days.

true or not, stuff like this will come back to haunt you

How is it at all correct if we continue to play dime packages on passing downs? If Wade's gone and whoever the D-CO is doesn't do that, then yeah we'll need someone else. But as for a 2-down linebacker, Bradie's about as good as it gets.

There were a lot of us saying he couldn't play including me. Obviously he can and I was wrong. At 240 he can play fairly well on 3rd down.

I'd be going ILB in round 1 next year....much to the chagrin of the 'no way we draft another LB early' crowd. It's needed, badly.

I would go ILB just based on the fact that Thomas is getting any younger, and i don't see anyone that can step in and replace him on this roster

Well, Burnett is a free agent, Thomas is 35, Barbie hasn't shown any kind of ability other than a few plays in the Seattle playoff game and Bradie is an average LB. I'd say ILB would be something to perhaps upgrade for 2009. But that's just me. I know alot of people like James but I'm not one of them. Good guy, ok leader, average linebacker.

I am sure glad we got this season out of the way already. Where is David when we need him.

We do need another ILB but I wouldn't go round one unless its a guaranteed Dick Butkus. I suspect Zack will play another year or three but they need to look in the mid to lower rounds. Or find another Zack Thomas in the bushes.

Guess you didn't read the last line. I'm looking forward to this season and am not writing it off, but I do like to look to see how the team sets up for the future so they can be a consistent contender.

I'm definitely hoping Thomas goes injury free this year and decides to come back next year, but I still think ILB is one of our biggest concerns next year. I'd wager we've seen the last of Burnett and Carpenter after this season, and I'm not a James hater, but I think we can/should do better.

I did read the last line but imo any draft talk no matter the context is not productive. The time for draft talk has come and gone, the regular season is upon us, nothing else matters.

Well, considering that this is a forum to discuss all things 'Cowboys', I think it's relevant. Jerry Jones thinks it's relevant too, otherwise he wouldn't be paying scouts to be addressing it this time of year.

We're lucky, we can do both...concentrate on the current season, and specualte on the next. Regardless of how premature it is. :D

1st i'd go NT if a vince wilfork is available. this team needs a better dline if it wants to become an elite defense.

***? since when what is discussed on a cowboys message board have any bearing on how productive our team is?

I thought we would have addressed the ILB position in this years draft either with Tavares Gooden or Beau Bell however we went CB and RB heavy. So those will definitely be positions we need to draft this year ILB NT OL. I would have really preferred someone to study behind Thomas that was young. Bradie James is alright he doesn't drop back deep in coverage and a lot of stuff Roy gets blamed for its never the ILB fault that don't get back in coverage far enough. Hopefully Thomas will help that out.

Give me Roy Williams as a free agent and Maualuga in the draft, and I won't even ask for anything else. :D
