Campo in the mix

Albert Breer E-mail News tips

I think all of us who were at the Cowboys minicamp this weekend came away impressed with the energy Dave Campo brought to the drills.

He was all over Mike Jenkins. He looked like he was moving a hundred miles an hour. He appeared to be very much in his element.

Maybe that's because this feels like home to him.

"It was great," Campo said. "I'm really happy to be here. Even just looking at the Cowboy uniforms, there's nothing like the Cowboy uniforms."

But that wasn't the only reason Campo felt comfortable. For the first time since 1994, his sole responsibility is to coach a position. In each of the last 13 seasons, he's served as an assistant head coach, or a coordinator, or a head coach. And the interactive nature of handling one spot appeals to him.

"That's what I like to do and I'm really enjoying coaching a position, because that's why I got into coaching in the first place," he said. "I like being around the guys, I like the one-on-one contact. And with the rookies here, we've got the one-on-one with them, they're not going to have this same one-on-one time when the veterans get here."

Once they do show up, Campo looks to have a stacked deck at corner -- with Terence Newman, Anthony Henry and Pacman Jones (if he's reinstated), going with Jenkins and Scandrick. The competition for jobs and snaps at that spot, Campo says, is good for everyone.

"If you have competition, you're going to get the best out of everybody," he said. "And you saw here last year, both of the corners had injuries, so you've got to have a minimum of three that can play, because you're gonna face three wideouts all through the year. But you really need four that you can count on to step in and play because you don't know what's going to happen."

Newman, Henry, Pacman, Jenkins, Hamlin, Roy...I think even I could coach that group.

I am not sure I am ready to watch campo running around screaming on the sideline this year. That is going to take some getting used to again.

CAmpo was not a good head coach, but he caught a lot of hate when fired that was undeserved for a guy who had been such a good coach and coordinator previously.

It's cool to hear how he feels about the Cowboys, the uniforms, etc....He's going to be a great addition.

Always like Dave...a lot.

The fact that he was willing to subject his ego to coming back as a positional coach was impressive to me, and from the Cowboys' perspective, I think Dallas got a good coach.

I think he's going to make a difference with a couple of these guys.

Jimmy Johnson thought highly enough about Campo to hire him when he was with the Hurricanes and brought him to Dallas to coach the secondary. Campo knows what he is doing and I think will be a big help to this unit.

I have no problem with him being a 'position' coach. But, HC material he never was.

I agree with most here. Campo was not a good HC. That much is certain. I think JJ felt he "owed" it to Campo to some degree....

I don't think Campo was that good a DC as well. We had some great players when he was coordinator....and I always felt frustrated with how we never seemed to get consistent pressure on the QB under his watch....Of course, that was a while back. My memory gets fuzzy the further back I go.

But Campo was always a good DB coach. Here's a guy that took Larry Brown, James Washington, and Thomas Everett and made them into a formidable secondary. Those guys were washouts with other teams. He developed Darren Woodson into a star. Until Deion came, we really didn't have what would be considered a "star studded" secondary.

Campo did a good job there.

Nope, and he must know it because he seemed to have no problem coming back at a much lesser position. Either that or he really loves the Cowboys.

With all the deservedly talk about Newman, Henry, Adams & Jenkins at CB, we shouldn't forget guys like Scandrick & Ball. Understand Wade has already said we'll keeping 6 CBs (Newman/Henry/Adams/Jenkins/Scandrick/Ball?) which is really smart. Reality is both Newman & Henry hurt last year; Henry's contract ends after 09 season. Barring injuries/off field problems & if these CBs so as well as we hope, we should be set for at least the next 5 to 8 years.

Our safety situation is a lot different. Hamlin is an unsigned franchise FS w/ backups Pat Watkins & Courtney Brown; starting SS Roy Williams will need lot of Dave Campo's attention. Hopefully somehow Campo can get more out of RWilliams then we've seen in last 2 years. With the departure of backup SS Keith Davis, we've got nobody behind RWilliams. Don't know if Cowboys plan adding a backup at SS or if Hamlin moves over to SS whenever necessary but then whose our starting FS? Can't rule out the possibility Cowboys will jettison RWilliams after 08 season if his play doesn't improve & they feel the cap hit is more bearable.

Don't forget that Campo has 2 grown daughters who live in Dallas area; part of his excitement at returning home to Dallas (even has his old office back at VR) was to be near his children. Given his age, I expect this Dallas stop to be his last coaching job; you can bet he wants to end his career coaching Cowboy teams with legit SB aspirations over the next few year--just like the old days. Getting another SB ring would be icing on the cake.

Campo did a heck of a job with Dallas's D for a long long time. They often overachieved.

Yeah, he wasn't great as head coach (didn't have a ton to work with). You could never fault his effort or attitude though.

The only thing that used to kill me the most was listening to Campo press conferences. He'd go on and on about the other teams star players, till you felt our team never had a chance. Plus it was all flowers and perfume, etc and very boring.

Then the Parcells press conferences came and what a difference.

Campo seems to be the penultimate good guy, but he does pay attention and he does TEACH. You need *** chewers and you need teachers. Parcells did both. Campo is more respected as a positive, upbeat guy that teaches.

I really hope our db's do well under him and I hope he can rejuvenate our Roy Williams.

I can't think of a better guy to be my head coach while my team goes through salary cap hell. He never stood a chance.

Agreed. But Camps also had no chance. Those were some of the worst teams I've ever seen us field in all my years as a fan.
