Franchise, transition numbers released

We've got the franchise and transition player numbers from the NFLPA.
For those who don't know, once a guy is designated a "franchise player", his original team retains matching rights. And if that team lets him go after signing an offer sheet with another team, it receives two first-round picks as compensation. By tagging a guy a "transition player", the original team retains matching rights, though there is no compensation if that team chooses not to match an offer sheet signed by the player with another club.

The franchise number reflects the average of the top five salaries at a position. The transition figure is an average of the top 10 salaries (based on 2007 cap calculations) at a position. Here are those numbers, and the highest cap number at each spot:

QUARTERBACK
Franchise: $10.730 million
Transition: $9.500 million
High: Carson Palmer, Bengals ($13.480 million)
RUNNING BACK
Franchise: $6.538 million
Transition: $5.699 million
High: LaDainian Tomlinson, Chargers ($7.067 million)
WIDE RECEIVER
Franchise: $7.848 million
Transition: $6.872 million
High: Terrell Owens, Cowboys ($9.667 million)
TIGHT END
Franchise: $4.522 million
Transition: $3.733 million
High: Todd Heap, Ravens ($4.900 million)

OFFENSIVE LINE
Franchise: $7.455 million
Transition: $6.895 million
High: Walter Jones, Seahawks ($8.600 million)
DEFENSIVE TACKLE
Franchise: $6.363 million
Transition: $5.654 million
High: Dewayne Robertson, Jets ($7.391 million)
DEFENSIVE END
Franchise: $8.879 million
Transition: $7.679 million
High: Julius Peppers, Panthers ($12.438 million)
LINEBACKER
Franchise: $8.065 million
Transition: $7.335 million
High: Ray Lewis, Ravens ($9.429 million)
CORNERBACK
Franchise: $9.465 million
Transition: $7.659 million
High: Nate Clements, 49ers ($12.267 million)
SAFETY
Franchise: $4.396 million
Transition: $3.893 million
High: Adam Archuleta, Bears ($5.095 million)
PUNTER/KICKER
Franchise: $2.514 million
Transition: $2.245 million
High: Rian Lindell, Bills ($3.260 million)

In case you're wondering, T.O. isn't the only Cowboy who's up high in salary at his position. Here's the other five who rank in the top 10 at their spots, with their position rank and cap number:

OL Flozell Adams (4th; $7.000 million)
CB Anthony Henry (7th; $5.600 million)
QB Tony Romo (6th; $8.917 million)
S Roy Williams (7th; $3.507 million)
TE Jason Witten (7th; $2.795 million)

Isn' this funny. The two weakest links in the secondary are paid so much, and the stroongest part of our offense is paid so little.

What will Newman and Hamlin cost?

Yeah, now the Bears are a team with a serious issue at SS on their hands. Adam is vastly over-paid, even more so than Roy. And, yes, I believe Roy is vastly over-paid. :)

That and Lovie Smith was fooled by his one year in St. Louis with him where he thought he was great. Turns out Adam had his one good year, that year.

3.8 mil to slap a transitional tag on Hamlin, or 4.3 to franchise him? That doesn't seem like too big of a cap hit if we can't resign him and don't think Watkins can handle the job.

Everyone knew Washington was stupid, who knew the Bears were even more so?

That was my first thought. I'm guessing we get a deal done. But it is comforting knowing that any long term deal to keep Hamlin wont approach 5-6 mil per as I feared. With a franchise number at the postion in the mid 4's, you'd think any long term deal would average 4 mil.

Considering his age, I'd go 6 years 24 mil 8 mil SB. His annual cap numbers could look like this: 2mil 3mil 3mil 4mil 5mil 6mil

FYI - If you had all 22 starters making their position's transition cap number, it would cost about 140mil.

Refers to the state of mind the Bears were when offering Archuleta his contract.

He needs to be released immediately (so Dallas can sign him).

I hope not Ray Lewis will be entering his 13th season in the NFL and Dallas does not need to pay out big money for a guy on the downside of his career.

The Commanders gave Archuleta that contract. The Bears were just idiots to trade for the guy, while taking on that deal.

Ray Lewis? Please NO.
I just think this team needs someone with his fire and passion, I don't see anyone on Dallas like that.

You've got it. We need a Ray Lewis on this team, pretty badly.
