Wow.

Bryan Broaddus is on 103.3 right now and he said Jim Hess and Clancy Pendergast talked about Roy being poor in coverage even in the war room when they drafted him. No real surprise there.

But he also said that Roy wouldn't even take reps covering TEs and big WRs in practice because he was so poor at it and he was afraid of being embarrassed.

That's incredible.

Also says that the scheme change isn't anything, but that Roy probably just doesn't like learning a new D and having to play a new scheme. Says he doesn't like change. Says he really missed Woody because Roy explained everything to him.

Also says some people he knows say he doesn't have the fire in his gut to work and improve.

Says he does think Campo might help him, because Campo is so good and such a good teacher... Besides the obvious familiarity with him from his first two years.

Thinks they cut bait with Roy if he's not better this year.

This is beyond ********.

Roy may or may not suck.

But saying that going one-on-one without any help in either direction is difficult is hardly evidence one way or the other as to whether he sucks or not.

This is so stupid.

I am pretty sure Roy Williams is well aware that coverage is not his strongest asset.

I see no problem with Roy Williams being honest and forthright when discussing his apprehension about being thrown at when in a one-on-one situation, especially since it is obviously not his strongest point.

Everyone on has a weakness and at some point or another showed a little fear when someone tried to exploit it.

The same Roy Williams that has been to about 5 Pro Bowls and an All-Pro selection?

Roy Williams' weaknesses in coverage are very evident, but he has been a good player for us.

I know. I've always been a huge Roy fan. He was an amazing, amazing player in college... One of the best I've ever seen. And he continued that here at first.

What I and probably others hate more than the actual decline in play is the attitude he shows. Not working as hard as he should, letting himself get fat in the offseason, and worst of all, the part you quoted... That he'd rather hide from his deficiencies than try to correct them. That's what turns people against Roy.

I mean, any player can fall off due to injury or wearing down. That's unfortunate, but it's also understandable. But when you just don't put in the effort, that's pretty much inexcusable.

While I think Calvin had a couple good points in his post earlier, I would argue vehemently about the idea that people have been "brainwashed" by the big, bad media to think that Roy Williams is deficient in coverage.

Even if it's clear as day to me and lot of other people who aren't coaches, even if it's been expressed to me by people who are coaches, you don't need that "brainwashing" to be aware that Williams has problems defending the pass. Why? Because Roy admitted as much himself.

"I will admit that at times, when I had one-on-one situations and you're head up on a tight end or a receiver that can go left or right, it's tough," he said. "I mean, it's just tough. Sometimes you just hope they don't throw the ball your way, because sometimes you're like, if they go inside, you don't have any help; if they go outside, you don't have any help.

"That's why corners get paid the big bucks."

Can you imagine Ed Reed saying such a thing? How about Bob Sanders? Or Troy Polamalu. I can't.

Maybe you'd say it's unfair to compare him to those guys. But his paycheck says you're well within your rights to place him up against those elite players.

All those guys, to my knowledge, are the "football is important to me" types. To be that good in the NFL, you almost have to be like that. And there's some question as to whether Roy is or not.

Plus, Roy is battling a losing game in another way here -- the bigger, slower, hard-hitting, in-the-box safety is, in many ways, a dinosaur. If you look at the safeties who are going high in the draft these days, most of them have experience as corners, and at times are the best athletes on the field. No longer is that position a place to hide slower corners. Now, it's a spot for some of the most versatile players in the game, who are forced into coverage situations and tested through offensive personnel groupings and formations.

Look, I'm not saying Roy isn't salvageable as a player. But I would worry that he's not, based on his grousing to teammates about the scheme (the best safeties are versatile enough to play in any scheme), his stated lost confidence in himself, his apparent separation from his teammates and the importance football might hold in his life.
Well put. To me, with the passrush the Cowboys have, the idea of a CB-FS-FS-CB 2ndary isn't a bad one. STopping the run wasn't Dallasn't problem. It was covering the pass. If we have 2 FS's out there w/ good range to make plays on the ball, why not?

Jerry shouldn't even put that #38 jersey on sale. It would just be a waste of marketing.

Have they started selling the Amendola jerseys yet?

Thats amazing. Ive said this guy is a sissy in the past, but I am 100% convinced of it now. I dont know how his coaches let him skate by like that.

Im saying the part of him not wanting to cover at all to avoid embarassment is BS. Parcells wouldn't have stood for that one bit. Bill doesn't care who you are, if you don't work hard and hold your own, he lets you know about it. I really cannot see Parcells letting that happen.

Maybe its just me but...

I find it extremely hard to believe that Roy is so afraid of getting embarrassed in one on one drills during practice that he just sits out.

Anybody actually believe the coaches... BILL PARCELLS in particular... would allow something so stupd to go on for 4 years?

I find it even more unbelievable that, through all those training camps with all the media coverage and fans watching, THIS is the first time that someone has ever said "Roy doesn't ever take reps in One on One coverage drills".

How many of you people that have gone to Training Camps see Roy standing off on the side while all of the rest of the DB's are running their drills in practice?

Just reporting what he said. Maybe it was only in 2002 before Parcells got there.
