Jason Hatcher was a 3rd round pick (Canty was a 4th). I think we will survive with a Hatcher/Bowen combo at right end. Throw in Ratliff if we land a NT. That being said if a top-rated DE starts slipping I wouldn't cry if we drafted him.
I really feel we almost have to go BPA in the draft. At pick 51 who knows who will be there. I want to add great players but maybe this team just needs to plug in "football players" at a few spots. If you look at our team, pre-Free Agency, we have 2 obvious holes and that's it. RDE and RILB. We have two pretty highly-drafted players (Hatcher and Carpenter) who maybe just maybe might prove themselves in camp. I also feel we need improved safety play and a true NT. We have Roy and Hamlin at safety and even though most of us have issues with their play, that's a lot of experience and money back there. As far as NT, I'd love to see what Ratliff could do at DE as well as see some big guy clog up the middle but Ratliff is playing his butt off at NT.
So besides RB and TE we can sit there and just take the highest guy on the draft board and improve our depth. No reaching for players or overpaying to trade up. Just take the best guy there at 51.
So to get back to the topic, no reason to overpay to keep Canty. If we wanted him, he would have been re-signed before the end of the season. Best of luck Canty.
