Tim MacMahon E-mail News tips

I ran into Massachusetts native Marc Colombo outside the Celtics' locker room at the American Airlines Center last night.

It's hard to miss a 6-8, 320-pound dude wearing a big, green Paul Pierce jersey. But I almost didn't recognize Colombo because of the big smile on his face.

Colombo, quite an intense fella come football season, was happy about the Celtics' win over the Mavericks. He's ecstatic that Jerry stepped up to sign Flozell Adams before the left tackle could test the open market.

Colombo reiterated his remarks from last month that he considers Adams one of the elite pass-blocking tackles in football. He's also confident that continuity in the offensive line will pay dividends.

"I think Jerry's showing that, by signing [Adams], he's committed to the offensive line," Colombo said. "That's really big in my book that he did that. I'm really excited about this season having Flozell back.

"We're going to have the entire offensive line back. You don't know how huge that is to me."

I'm glad we signed Flo too.....

It may come at the cost of losing Columbo next season.

There is promise with Free and McQuistan. I see us losing Columbo next year.

Just a guy that was drafted in the 1st round and allowed us to end our long search for tackles.

True...heck he's a solid player...nothing more

But he's a 1st ballot HOF'er when compared to Rob Pettiti and Torrin Tucker

McQuistan (if he's not going to compete with our weakness @ LG), or James Marten will be just fine...I dont know if Free has enough lead in his arse to anchor @ RT

You definitely underestimate him.

If we have pro bowlers at every position on the OL, we wouldn't have any money for elsewhere.

He is really a very very good fit here in Dallas.

I actually think Columbo is a pretty good player. I just want him to half the false starts he had this season.

Actually Colombo is better then most give him credit for. Remember reading an analysis of his play against the Green Bay pass rusher (can't remember that guy's name) and he did well. We didn't have to give him any help during most of the game -- even tho Colombo hurt his ankle early in that game.

Will be interesting to see how our young OTs (Free/Marten/McQuistan) look during the TC & preseason games. Last year coaching staff was especially impressed by Doug Free's play seeing him as Adams successor. Marten didn't impress but hopefully this year he'll be able to show more at RT. McQuistan could also challenge at both OT positions. In any case the one who doesn't win the battle as successors to Adams & Colombo could also see time at OG to possibly challenge Kosier who I believe enters 4th year of his 5 year contract.

BTW: I really don't see us drafting an OT but an OG who can play C might be a possibility. I'm interested in Oneil Cousins who projected to go as early as the 3rd round but more likely in the 4th. Haven't seen him play but Huddle Report believes he could play at OT down the road but I'd be more interested in him at OG/C; Cousins has played ALL OL positions & is also a L/S.
4th round & would be a steal if he slide to the 5th.

i hope Jerry has the good sense to sign him again. He brings a little 'tude to that OL.. and is the first to get in a fight to protect another player.. Plus he is a very very good RT. I would hate to lose him.

Colombo is a very nice RT. But the money we just gave to Davis and Flo in the last two offseasons means that Marc will likely be looking for a new home next offseason while Dallas goes with one of its younger guys at RT.

I'm sure he's thrilled with Flo returning cause he thinks it will give him a shot at a big contract as well, after the season, as much as anything.

He just isn't likely going to get it from us. Not with Newman, Owens, Barber and Canty to be resigned ahead of him.

I, for one, am excited about our OL next year.

They were good last year....a little weak in the run-blocking department...but they did well for the most part.

It finally looks like we'll have some consistency along the line. All five starters return. How long has it been since we had that kind of continuity?

Columbo's got the most fire of any of our OL guys. Also a serious example for the young playyer, of what hard work will get you. Asset to the team he's on.

RT money isn't as exorbitant as LT money. Unless something happens soon in CBA Columbo's contract would only count 1 year against the cap and then you will have the uncapped year.

Colombo will give Dallas a discount price because they took a chance on him when other teams overlooked him... I believe they'll show him some love at the end.

If Andre can learn how to snap with consistency, I think that can happen.

Marc Columbo clearly doesn't know what he is talking about. Experts on this site have assured me Jerry has sat on his hands this Free Agency period. He's now Nero Jones, fiddling while Rome burns.

The highlight of Columbo's career is the smack down hit he laid on Deangelo Hall.

Priceless.
