Sam Hurd will never be an NFL star. He'll probably never be an NFL starter.

But he's the kind of guy every good team needs.

Hurd, who signed his tender to play for $1.54 million next season, has carved out a career in the NFL because of his work ethic and willingness to do dirty work. During training camp, he was usually one of the last players off the field after practice, sticking around to catch extra balls, either from a quarterback or the JUGGS machine. He's one of the Cowboys' best punt/kick cover guys, and he's by far their best blocking receiver.

Hurd's 2008 season was cut short by an ankle injury that required surgery, but his last play says a lot about his toughness and character. Despite his mangled ankle, Hurd threw a vicious block to spring Marion Barber for the touchdown that sent the game against the Cardinals into overtime.

that was a really awesome block, I think he has three of those.

It was a great block and not the first one I've seen him throw. The guy has no trouble giving up his body to throw a block. I really like Sam Hurd. I hope he can stay healthy this year and contribute.

I remember when we played the Bears on Sunday night a couple of years ago, and he through a great downfield block, the very next play a deep pass was completed to Hurd, Madden proceeded to say that Hurd was being "rewarded" on that play because of his effort on the previous one.

The only problem with this article is that no, we do not need more Sam Hurd's.

We need more Demarcus Ware's.

I like Hurd as much as Austin but the guy is a marginal roster guy who may not even make the club. He is a try hard overachiever but he has physical limitations that prevent him from being more than that.

Personally, I'd rather have more guys like Demarcus Ware.

...not taking anything away from Hurd's dedication, of course. :)

I love Sam Hurd, and we need more of both type of players in my book.
Hurd's not a marginal roster guy, though. Barring injury, he makes this team easily.

We need him to produce. All we've talked about is his potential. The same goes for stanback. I'm all for drafting a WR. We need to put pressure on these cats. No more free lunches.

True... What he should have said is that we need more guys with Sam Hurd's attitude.

As the team is currently constituted, I agree.

If so it will be the first time. Hurd isn't a make the roster easily kind of guy. He is a 4th WR at best and those guys are always clawing. Because he is always clawing we love his effort and attitude but he is far from safe.

I expect he makes the team but if we do draft a rookie WR it could well come down to Stanback versus Hurd.

I do remember that as well. It was nice to see him get a ball after that block cause it was a darn good one.

Yep I agree with that. I think what is still here after all the changes are those types of guys.

I do think hurd is a bubble guy because stanbach's athletic ability will always intrigue/tease/give hope to the staff over hurds seemingly one dimensional abilities as a wr.

If we draft a wr in the second or third that can play I would think hurd could be the guy out, unless stanbach is terrible this summer.

He's too good a special teams player on a team that needs special teams players not to make the team. Admittedly, I have a soft spot for the guy b/c he works so hard and keeps his nose clean, but I think he could step in for Crayton and the team wouldn't miss a beat.

There are always marginal guys like Hurd on every roster.
What Hurd brings is attitude and commitment to be a better player.
Thats what you want from other marginals like... Courtney Brown, Allen Ball, and Watkins,,,,just to name a few.

We need to be able to depend on our 4th and 5th WRs to produce when called on. Obviously we must have STs play and better than we've been getting.

I think we do need more players like Hurd, and I think Ware agrees with me there, he said we have too many chiefs, and not enough indians

Demarcus Ware is a once in a generation player. You can't expect to have too many of those. If you could have 53 of those on one roster, then the NFL would need 100 teams.

Most of the time, the differences between NFL rosters is how many Sam Hurds do you have? How many guys are willing to sacrifice themselves and do the little things that let the Demarcus Wares be so successful?
