The Dallas Cowboys need a quality leadoff hitter to get the offense moving from the start.

The Cowboys are among four NFL teams that have not scored a touchdown on their first possessions this season. Cleveland, Kansas City and San Francisco -- a combined 9-24 -- are the other slow-starting teams.

For the season, Kansas City and the Cowboys are tied for the fewest points on the first possessions. In 11 games, each teams' opening drive has resulted in a total of three points. New Orleans leads the league with 41 points in its 11 first possessions.

The Cowboys got their opening-possession points in the season opener at Tampa Bay. In 10 games since then, the Cowboys opening possessions have ended with eight punts and two missed field goals.

David Buehler doesn't have sights on touchback mark

David Buehler has 20 touchbacks this season, which is the most by a Cowboy since Lin Elliott had 27 in 1992 before kickoffs were moved to the 30 and the use of a lower tee.

Buehler is tied for third in the NFL, two back of the leaders, with five games to go. He's on pace for 29 this season, which would be 29 more than the Cowboys had last year.

"I started out with one goal in mind and that was to lead the NFL in touchbacks," Buehler said. "Whatever comes with that is gravy on top. I set my goals high because it gives me the drive and determination to accomplish them. If I didn't strive to be the best, I'd be satisfied with being second-best or third-best."

On Sunday, Buelher tackles his toughest foe yet - Giants Stadium. The Meadowlands is a particularly tricky place to kick in because of the swirling winds. In the Giants' first five home games, there have been only six touchbacks.

"Playing in southern California I was pretty pampered with having great weather," Buehler said, "but I've kicked in cold-weather games. The wind is a huge factor and when it's cold the ball will travel differently. You just have to adjust to it."

Buehler is not sure he will be on any other special teams units Sunday after focusing solely on kickoffs with his toe injury the last few weeks. He said the pinky toe is not an issue anymore.

And if you're wondering if he might get a look on field goals with Nick Folk's struggles, don't hold your breath. Buehler said he hasn't really worked on field goals much during the year, but he did some on Monday from shorter distances. Earlier this week Wade Phillips said the only non-injury scenario in which he would use Buehler would be on a long, long, long field goal try.

Is Buehler Ricky Bobby's father?

I'd love to see a trick play on our opening possession to give the offense a lift. Flea-flicker, halfback pass from the wildcat... something. Just don't turn it over, obviously.

With a grand total of 0 points in our last 10 opening possession, what do we really have to lose?

If you asked Garrett he'll say that we'll lose the ability to determine what defenses are giving us. In fact, I remeber a Garrett quote from early last year that his philospohy for the first few drives of a game is to run basic plays to see how defenses choose to line up to defend them. That way he'll know what to call the rest of the game using his "take what the defense gives us" mentality.

So this is why Dallas never socres on the opening drive - because the objective is to collect information, not to move the ball or score.

Do I like this? OF COURSE NOT! I'd rahter that Dallas used their offense to dictate the game to defenses, specifically thruogh the running game - the team's strength. But instead, we have a passive coordinator that would rather have the game dictated to him. It's no wonder he's consistently getting outcoached.

Okay, that's weird. I don't see those first two guys listed at nfl.com.

so should we let NY drive the ball on us in its first possessions so we can see what they do against certain defenses?

Josephhuss, yours is sorted by kicking. Koenen and Morstead are listed as punters.

Phoenix is sorted by kickoff kicker.

Hey, spell my fake name right! Thanks for clearing that up. He is doing well no matter how it is sorted. He would already have the team record for touchbacks if he kicked under the same conditions as Lin Elliot(35 yard line and a 3" tee).

You people that bang on Garrett will do so regardless of what he does. The bolded part above is exactly the way most of the really good play callers in this league go about the first drive or two, its called "scripting plays" and has been done for years.

Dallas isnt scoring on opening drives because they arnt executing. A couple weeks ago we went right down field but Romo missed a wide open WR for an easy TD then Folk missed a FG. Several times we made some plays on drives to move the ball but then had a penalty or missed block etc etc and killed a drive.

That's a valid point. Another example is Barber's fumble vs. the 'Skins. That drive had 7 written all over it.
