DMN Blog: Cowboys want to let Felix Jones loose in the Wildcat

I mean you related the Wildcat, which will be gone by November of next year- to the K-Gun which isn't really all that unconventional.

Putting your QB in the slot isn't a good idea, it has seen its best days - and no team will ever have success using it for long periods of time. It is good to give the defense a new look, or put the ball in a playmakers hand from time to time - but I don't think its the best way of attacking defenses.

There were a TON of elements in the K-gun that were unconventional. Opposing teams went beserk when the no-huddle became an integral part of the offense. 3 and 4 receiver base formations were unconventional. A running back who was essentially a 4th or 5th receiver, etc., etc., etc.

Not to mention, there are a ton of new ideas that morph and become part of "traditional" football. Do you remember when the forward pass was considered unconventional?? Or when FBS were the primary rushers? Or when OL went over 300 lbs? The 3-4? The 46? West Coast Offense? Air Coryell and his TE that was basically a WR? Or zone blitzes?

anything that puts the ball in felix's hands is a good thing.

And I think Felix has a lot of experience in with what he has shown with his ability to block or his ability to come out of the backfield as a receiver or with all of that then it stems right there

I still don't exactly understand Jerry speak. I know what he's saying. I just don't get why he chose that sequence of words to say it.

You forgot to throw in the lipsmacks and the "umm"s. Add those in and it makes perfect sense.

And I *ummm* think Felix has a lot of experience in with *lipsmack* what he has shown *lipsmack* with his ability to *umm* block or his *umm* ability to come out of the backfield *umm* as a receiver or *lipsmack* with all of that *lipsmack* then it stems right there

;)

If the Cowboys run the Wildcat it won't be Felix taking the snaps from Center most of the time.

There will be a few direct snaps to him, but for the most part he would be playing the option TB role or he would split wide to the WR spot.

McFadden was the 'QB' when they ran the Wild Hog at Arkansas.

Stanback is going to run the wildcat?

Anyone really think he will stay healthy doing that?

Belichik says the Wildcat could be the beginning of a new era in the NFL. That makes me realize a lot of people are thinking about it incorporating it more and more.

The fact is as more and more college programs play the spread offenses (running style and passing style) it eventually has to show up in the NFL.

I appoint you the Zone's official Jerry speak translator.:)

How do you know whether it's a gimmick or not?? At what point is it considered a gimmick? I'm sure the WCO was considered a gimmicky offense when it was first created too.

At some point down the line, it will either fade away or turn into a popular system. If it fades away then you can call it a gimmick, but it's too early to tell right now.

Exactly! There was a time long ago in the NFL that the forward pass was a gimmick; years later the NFL is now a passing league.

No, but Pat White could. :)

BTW, Drew Boylhart (thehuddlereport.com) rates White as a 1st rd WR talent. He absolutely loves the guy as a WR and emergency #3 QB. He thinks White will develop into an impact #1 WR.

Contrary to popular belief, the Wildcat is not new. It was the predominant offense during the early years of football.

I would be impressed if Dallas learned to run their base offense first.

Jason Garrett needs to worry about running the ball out of normal formations, instead of trying to implement a formation that is basically a trcik play nowadays. The fact is, it is not new and it played itself out last year. It's like a short re-birth of the bell bottoms in fashion.

hearing all this talk about the wildcat is really pissing me off. i hope all year were not gonna be running this gimickey offense that team already figured out towards the end of last season.

They figured this offense out way before the end of last season.

maybe the wildcat is like the Packers Power sweep... Lombardi had a good run!

No way, his hair hurts so he will be on IR....this player is Skyler Green redux -- except he can't stay healthy long enough to get on the field.

Something tells me it's unlikely you would be.

There you go. If Dallas really wants to use this trick offense, on occassion, they don't have to waste picks getting people to do it with. Those players are already here.

I don't expect we'll see much Wildcat this year. I think most teams are smart enough to realise that the fad was starting to seriously die by the end of last season.
