The second-team defense stunk during the preseason opener, but Wade Phillips said that's not a reflection on linebacker Bobby Carpenter.

To borrow a term from Emmitt Smith, Carpenter was apparently a diamond among trash. Or at least some sort of gem.

"He made a lot of plays. He was in the right places a lot," Phillips said. "He made a nice play on the play play where he broke up the tight end going down the middle, he covered well. I thought he played well in the game. Now the group didn't play well that he was playing with, but he made plays all over the field, and he played like he's been practicing."

Carpenter was only credited with one tackle, but those stats are meaningless. The Raiders stat crew was in preseason form. They credited undrafted offensive guard Greg Isdaner with Keith Brooking's sack.

if he does well it's not real if he does horrid it is real.

Actually that sounds a lot like me...

Carpenter wasn't awful.

And I remember him forcing the QB to throw one time on a blitz.

He needs to make more plays at or behind the line of scrimmage. But in fairness when there are guys laying on the ground in front of you (Savaii) it's hard to make your way to the hole.

This is encouraging news. Our little Barbie might be turning into Ken, lol.

Is that what Cowboy fans have been reduced to? "Carpenter wasn't awful"

Tim Anderson was really putrid last night as well. No real surprise that he was cut after that performance.

If Anderson was cut for performance than Courtney Brown should have been left in Oakland, because he was the worst player on the field. I think the Cowboys didn't want to mess around with Anderson because he is hurt.

Did he change his number? If he didn't, I much have been watch a different game.

Carp, looks like one and plays worse. Brown: horrible too. Watkins: ditto......time to CHURN.......................

The thing about Watty.............he's like dejavue. Everytime I see him it's a day late and a dollar short. He walks away clapping his hands and shaking his head like it's something new to him.

Side note: Who remembers the pic of him with the broom in his first TC? Most of us couldn't tell which one was the broom. :laugh2: I swear, if you stashed him in the shed he'd pass for a rake.

I think Carpenter will be fine for the role we are going to use him for, which is a nickel LB. He blitzes well enough and has pass coverage skills. His weakness against the run isnt going to be much of an issue when he's playing almost exclusively on passing downs.

He was around the plays a lot, he got moved off his spot a few times later in the game and didn't look particularly more aggressive than usual to me but I think he can be productive with the starting unit if given the chance.

Mickens was pretty awful too.

Agreed, maybe he's not that physical but he's going to be good in coverage and he's got the speed to be a good blitzer.

Agreed. It just amazes me how much Wade is criticized but hardly ever praised for his ability to find roles on his defense for his players. He was been doing this long before Belicheat was doing this but Belicheat gets praised as a genius when he does it.

Some fans are so busy campaigning against Wade and they are missing a true defensive genius at work.
