On Tuesday we asked aloud whether Victor Butler deserved more playing time based on his production on limited playing time, including that trip/sack of Donovan McNabb.

On Wednesday we asked Wade Phillips about it and it doesn't sound like it.

"He's a young player," Phillips said. "He's very active. That's the only situation he'd really come in with the game on the line. The others we've been ahead or way ahead so that was an important step for him to come and make a play, especially a play like that."

And Phillips believes Anthony Spencer has played too good to be taken off the field even if he doesn't have a sack through eight games.

"He's a really good player against the run now," Phillips said. "And we drop him a lot more. He doesn't get the same number of rushes DeMarcus gets but there's a reason for that. DeMarcus is a great rusher. But I like what he's doing. He runs stunts well. Some of the sacks we've gotten because he's inside and somebody's come around ... I think he'll bust out because it's the same thing with a lot of our players. They have good ability, keep working hard and things will come."

I think Spencer is playing pretty well...

He has made the big play yet....sacks and ints....but he is i think leading the team in pressures....and does play the run pretty well. I also think his coverage skills are alot better then Ellis which gives Wade to dial up better blitz packages.

Butler will get his snaps....and they will probably be on obvious passing downs.....

It ain't broke, don't fix it.

Spencer is second on the team in QB pressures and tackles for loss, behind Ware and Ratliff, respectively, and leads the team in pass break ups among non-DBs. He's a very solid all-around LB.

I was on hold for the post game radio show, waiting to give my two cents on the game (which included the applause of V. Butler). However, they told me I was the next caller and I dropped my blackberry and it shut off. I was so mad, but that was likely the play of the game. I was also going to mention the Romo/Williams chemistry as well as the overall play of the defense and their getting take aways, etc.

I like this Butler...

I agree. He'll develop into a nice player. He plays well against the run. As long as he's doing that, I'm happy.

I trust Wade when it comes to linebackers, so whatever he says, I'll roll with but I'd love to see us get some packages where Butler, Ware and Spencer are all on the field.

Too small to play inside? He doesn't appear to be significantly smaller than Carp.

I can understand all the hype because of Butler but if you look at film you will see Butler does not play well.

He came up with big plays but against the Eagles he missed plays on a regular basis.

When he sacked McNabb that was a great tackle but if he had kept contain which i think he was supposed to McNabb would have never been able to run. Hadn't he made the tackle McNabb could have gained alot of yards.

Before that play he missed a screen pass.

etc...

Butler does one thing: he rushes. He does that well just because he is so fast. But he rushes regardless what the offense shows. He doesn't read the offense he just rushes full speed.

Maybe thats what he is told by the coaches because they know he still has a long way to go. So they let him do the thing he does best. Anyway i don't see him get siginificant playing time if he plays like that.

Having all 3 on the field when its not a passing down may confuse the Offense!

Seems I remember him crossing over the center on a stunt but he pretty much hit a wall, bounced back and as McChunky bailed out V came across and got the sack.

there's still gotta be obvious pass situations where you can just let him get after the qb like 3rd and 23

or end of game situations if the other team starts with a long field, let him get in there early and just let him go full bore.

I only care that Butler can provide enough reps to ensure Spencer isn't gassed in the 4th qtr.

but Wade would play Brandon Williams alot? I don't get it

Wade just has his pet players

You think they just may base thing on what they see during the week with these players? Novel concept used by most every coach out there. It is not pre-season or a time to guess with on a player. If a guy is showing the staff enough during the week and a clear understanding in meetings chances are that player will get some playing time

I agree with these comments by Wade. Spencer has played much better than some folks care to give him credit for. This is really his first year seeing significant playing time. I can see the light coming on at some point and this guy being a very good player.

Butler has seen spot duty since the seahawks game as he makes plays chances are his role will increase but if he can't handle the run or dropping into coverage and the coaches would know this by what they see during the week then it would be foolish and costly to the team to put a guy who can't handle all phases he needs to do in a larger role.

Agree as I have notived Spencer in on a ton of running plays. Absolutely can cover.
