DMN: BLOG: Don't underestimate Marc Colombo's importance

i like columbo's heart and toughness....and his nasty streak....but someone is going to have to be sacrificed to keep ware, canty, tank, pac man....and we are going to have to make a play for a #1 WR from somebody else real soon....and that player will come with a heavy price tag...so I think Columbo will be the odd man out at Jerry's ATM

If free or Mcq show enough then they will let Colombo walk. I think McQ might be having a bad camp- he looked a lot better last year. Bad time for him to slump. Free has not looked as good as some thought he was going to be either. So if NEITHER of them look really good then maybe Jerrah is going to have to bite the bullett. We learned the HARD way how important tackles are. Oh, by the way- some people keep saying it was Jerrah that discovered Colombo- that was a BP find all the way!

Don't underestimate Marc Colombo's importance

It's very iffy whether RT Marc Colombo, who is entering the final season of his contract, will be back with the Cowboys next year.

That depends on a lot of factors, such as the development of young tackles Doug Free and Pat McQuistan and the health of Colombo.

Remember, he injured his knee so badly as a Bears rookie in 2002 that he had to sit out a season and a half and was out of football for two months after Chicago cut him in 2005.

Colombo can't move nearly as well as his Pro Bowl linemates, but just ask them how important his experience and mean streak are to that group. Or watch the tape of last season's win over Green Bay, when Colombo suffered a nasty ankle sprain early in the game and still neutralized Pro Bowl DE Aaron Kampman.

"Toughness," RG Leonard Davis said when asked about Colombo. "He's a tough guy. He plays through a lot of injuries and aches and pains, and he's been there."

The Cowboys might be careful on the issue of Colombo's future, but there's no question he'll be a key to this season's Super Bowl hopes.

I think Marc's the most underrated lineman we have, and should have been in the Pro Bowl last year... and I expect even better things from him this year, because he seems to me to be the prototype for what Hudson Houck looks for in an offensive lineman...

I don't mind them a bit.

All the better when they flounder around 8-8 and spin their wheels for decades.

You have a deliciously sadistic streak in you, son... I like it...

And I agree, I don't get upset when Skins fans get froggy in the offseason, I just smile contemplating their bitter depression when reality slaps them upside the head during the regular season... it's fun, watching them get all down in the dumps...

It's fairly remarkable that we salvaged Colombo's career. For all the second and third chances first-round picks get in this league (see: Mike Williams), you don't actually see too many succeed on down the road. I know Colombo's problem was health and not talent, but he had SO much problems staying healthy, it's unbelievable he's done what he's done the last two seasons.

Even if he never played another down, it's a pretty good story.

Commander trolls aside, I remember what it was like when we didn't have a decent RT for years. Even though he's not great, the emergence of Colombo has been one of the biggest positives for this club over the last few years.

Columbo does solidify our line on his side, everybody has bad days but he really has done a good job and would be suprised if jerry lets him get away unless one of our young guys really blows up this year.
