A few greats from the Cowboys' '90s dynasty have questioned whether coachable WR Roy Williams is worth what the Cowboys gave up to get him and are paying him.
Drew Pearson, a star from the previous generation of Cowboys teams, gave Williams a vote of confidence.
Pearson, one of the franchise's best players not in the Ring of Honor (hint, hint, Jerry), mentioned that the current Cowboys' receiving corps is full of potential. "That means they haven't done it yet," he said while chatting with a handful of reporters after the JerryWorld opening ceremony. He elaborated by saying the departure of T.O. and his dominating personality gives the younger guys "a chance to blossom and grow." Pearson specifically mentioned Miles Austin, Sam Hurd, Patrick Crayton and Isaiah Stanback.
Williams was intentionally left out.
"I give him the pass right to the head of the class," Pearson said. "It's up to him now to take advantage of that and stay at the head of the class, and I think he will.
"I had a talk with him a couple of weeks ago when our paths happened to cross, and he told me what he's been doing since the beginning of March -- working with the other receivers, working with the quarterbacks, including Romo, working on the things they need to be working on now to develop the trust, the loyalty, the relationship. ... They're doing that now, and that's what you've gotta do. That's what it takes.
"So I give him a pass to the head of the class. He's proven. He's done some great things already in the NFL, and I've got to feel like he's really excited and motivated to want to do some of those things and even greater things in a Dallas Cowboy uniform, being a Texas guy. I think he'll step up and do what he's gotta do."
