DMN Blog: Emmitt believes Barber should ease up a bit

Would the fact that Emmitt was running behind one of the biggest and most productive lines in the NFL be the reason he did what he did and being that our line right now may be a little worse be the reason why barber has to make his own holes and play the way he plays? Just a question.. I understand what he means though...

I agree with everything but the 15-20 - over a full season that is close to 300 carries -- and that's too much for him.

So what would you like the breakdown to be? Something like 12 for him and 12 for Jones and then something like 1-5 for Choice depending on the situation?

Terrible advice...that's how He runs, hard and tough...You take that away and you have another Julius JOnes but only slower. Not only no but HELL NO!.

Give the rock to Felix more during the regular season and when the PLayoffs get around You pound the living hell out the opposing team with Barber. That's how it should go. Not run 90% or What-ever He ment.

you guys are so wrong on this. Emmitt Smith is 100% right. Think about it logically. Hardest runner in the NFL is MB3 his carries are about to go up. Running backs with a lot of mileage tend to breakdown. He will breakdown and when he does it isn't like he can lose a step and still be able to perform at a high level. He doesn't need any type of leg injuries what so ever. So if he doesn't get that extra yard doesn't matter if it reduce the strain on his body and increase his longevity in the NFL i think that is what is really important.

Knowing when to put it all on the line and when not to is a very tough thing for young players to do. Emmitt is right that MB3 WILL NOT LAST long if he keeps playing the way he is now and adds another 5-8 carries a game.
People with no knowledge claim that delivering the blow does not abuse the body; WRONG. IMPACT is IMPACT and the jarring and other damaging factors are only marginally better when you are the hammer vs being the HAMMERED.
The human body can take just so much abuse before it starts to break down.

I don't know that Barber could turn it off and on and still be as effective as he was last year. He needs to go at 110% every time, and spend enough time of the field to be effective for 4 quarters.

Yep and that is exactly why his role should stay the same as it was.

Felix is the speed and Barber is the hammer.
You dont reverse the two... let Barber close out the games.

Sorry but some of you guys are crazy. Mb3 should not have to think about when to pull off and when to go all out. He shouldnt hesitate for that extra yard. We should not worry about injuries. Injuries happen weather it's to hard runners like mb3 or softies like JJ. You run scared of getting injured and hello injuries.

If you want to help MB3 stay in the league longer and have Him more ready to go when it matters there is only one thing to do. Take away some of His carries and give them to felix JOnes....LIke That He rests more and is less prone to wear down.

I agree. I don't see Barber easing up at all. He got to this point in his career by running exactly how he is doing it now. He will fight you for the extra yard and that is not going to change

It should say something that both Tony D and Emmitt are "advising" Barber on how he should run now that he's the lead dog. Maybe it's more about maximizing Barber's effectiveness over the long haul by learning to how to avoid the big hit for the benefit of the team and his post-playing health.

Wow, a woman that knows football, how lovely! I couldn't have put it any better... When Emmitt and Tony give advice, RB's should listen.

I agree with Emmitt far as Barber being a bit more selective when it comes to lowering his shoulder, etc.. I think Emmitt made a very good point.

Emmitt looking for new Barber
May 5, 2008 8:00 AM

Posted by ESPN.com's Matt Mosley

I spent a large portion of my weekend attending the Cowboys' rookie minicamp, in part because Valley Ranch is 25 minutes from my front door. I also managed to attend a Kentucky Derby party in one of the nation's great horseracing towns, Hurst, Texas.

I bumped into several celebrities at rookie camp, including Emmitt Smith, Barry Switzer and Greg Pruitt. Smith, who dropped by on his way to the golf course Saturday, made an interesting statement about Cowboys running back Marion Barber during an impromptu news conference.

"I think he spends a lot of energy that may not be necessary," Smith said. "For a starting back, I'm all about putting your heart into it, but you're doing a lot of kicking, running up, bucking and you're exerting a lot of energy. We need you for four quarters --and I'm going to say 'we' because I'm a Cowboy, too. We need you for four quarters. If Marion has to carry the load for four quarters, there's no way he can handle it."

Smith then explained that he thought Felix Jones was a better back than Rashard Mendenhall because he has better hips. This comes on the heels of Jerry Jones fawning over Felix's "bubble butt."

While Emmitt gave Felix pointers on how to separate from linebackers, his son E.J. ran patterns for Jerry's 13-year-old grandson, Shy Anderson Jr., who displayed nice pocket presence.

If you have some downtime this afternoon, make sure you read my column on Felix Jones. Pretty neat kid.

Let see Dallas just drafted 2 backs including 1 in the 1st rd? I don't think Barber is going to ease up right now.

Well known doesn't equal "celebrity" in my book.

Good RB's knew how to give 110% and still play smart. They're not mutually exclusive.

Furthermore, I'm afraid that people have pidgeonholed MB3 as some Earl Campbell type of between the tackles runner .. .that's not what MB3 does ... at least not what he's best at. He bounces around and does a lot of hop cuts looking for space. Once he's in space he can isolate defenders and use his stiff arms and duck the shoulder ... but he's not really a guy who likes to run among the trash.
