CARTER IN, EMMITT OUT ON SUNDAY NFL COUNTDOWN

Posted by Mike Florio on July 29, 2008, 10:34 a.m. EDT
It’s official. Emmitt Smith will not be part of ESPN’s two-hour pregame show, NFL Countdown, in 2008.
ESPN is expected to make the formal announcement soon.
Emmitt will be replaced by Cris Carter, whose enhanced visibility could help his chances of getting into the Hall of Fame on the second try. (Then again, if Carter does a bad job or comes off as a blowhard, it could hurt him.)
Emmitt will remain on Monday Night Countdown, and he’ll have a role on the Sunday morning pre-Countdown version of SportsCenter.
The Sunday NFL Countdown lineup will consist of Chris Berman, Mike Ditka, Carter, Tom Jackson, Keyshawn Johnson, and Chris Mortensen.
Monday nights from Bristol also will feature Berman, Ditka, Carter, Jackson, Johnson, and Mortensen. Stationed at the game sites will be Stuart Scott, Smith, and Steve Young.
Also, it appears that Suzy Kolber and Michele Tafoya, who reportedly have been nudged out of the MNF broadcast (or, at a minimum, given minimal roles) will be reporting extensively for ESPN during pre-game and post-game coverage. This could mean reduced presence and/or involvement at the game locations of folks like Rachel Nichols, Sal Paolantonio, and Ed Werder.
UPDATE: Newcomer Trent Dilfer is expected to be a contributor to Monday Night Countdown, and to become a fixture on shows like NFL Live.

Cant say I dont blame them.

He was just so bad there was nothing they could do.

The only problem I have is I hate Chris Carter as much as anyone.

This is from ESPN:

"Former All Pro wide receiver Cris Carter has been named an analyst for Sunday NFL Countdown (10 a.m. Central) and Monday Night Countdown (6 p.m.), ESPN's popular NFL pre-game studio shows.

In addition, Emmitt Smith will move this fall from Sunday NFL Countdown to the new expanded Sunday morning editions of SportsCenter (7 a.m. and 9 a.m.) where he will offer insight and analysis during NFL segments. Smith will also continue to travel to the Monday Night Football game site each week for Monday Night Countdown."

ESPN has decided to move Emmitt Smith off Sunday NFL Countdown. He's being replaced by Chris Carter. Smith shifts to a role on the Sunday morning SportsCenter and keeps his job on Monday Night Countdown. Carter will be a Monday nighter, too.

Carter replaces Smith on Sundays and Bill Parcells on Mondays.

Big winner: Cris Carter

I plan on talking to ESPN decision makers so they can tell me how Smith shouldn't be auditioning for The Biggest Loser when the season starts.

IMO, Chris Carter is just as bad as Emmitt. Not sure it was an upgrade.

Chris Carter isn't an ounce better. Prepare yourself for the dumb face - where Carter has no idea what was just said or asked, but rallies himself and decides to answer anyway - with whatever is on his mind at the time.

I wonder why it is that ESPN has so many outstanding analysts/commentators in other sports, but is so sub-par when it comes to the NFL.

Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit do a great job with college football (not a fan of Lee Corso). They have some good NBA people and good college basketball people, too.

I look at their baseball lineup, with reporters like Buster Olney and Tim Kurkijan (sp?), former players like John Kruk and former GM Steve Phillips to name a few and I don't understand why they can't find better NFL people.

Mike Ditka is about the only one I enjoy listening to. He's entertaining.

Oh wow... no Cris Carter is WAY worse than Emmitt...

On top of that Emmitt was just a bitter former Cowboy, but Cris Carter has always been a Cowboys hater.

In a way it's kind of sweet though, because I'd love to see his face if we win it all this year.

I don't mind Carter. In fact, I think he's improved a great deal over the past few years. Emmitt was very hard to watch. Like nails on a chalkboard hard. I feel bad for Emmitt but it's like anything in life. If you want to get better, you have to work at it. Emmitt is not a guy who has ever sherked on his profession. I would suspect that if he's really serious about making this his profession, he will triple his efforts and put in the hard work that will make him a success. That's just who he has always been and I would not expect any different from him with this.

A bitter former Cowboy? Speaking negatively about Tony Romo doesn't make you a bitter Cowboy.

Carter is annoying to listen to, but Emmitt was cringe inducing. Part of it is that he is still my all time favorite Cowboy, but he's not [at this time] good at his job.

Oh he takes it beyond Romo... Romo's just his latest target. Emmitt the player... love him. Emmitt the commentator... can't stand him. I separate the two.

If you had seen Emmitt during that buffalo game last year you would not call him a bitter former Cowboy.

He and Irvin were celebrating as much as any fan here.

I'm glad that Emmitt is being reassigned. He wasn't doing a great job and there's a chance that he'll do better at the next assigment.

The spontaneous speech and comment thing isn't his strength. Maybe they'll have him doing more set pieces ... breaking down film and commenting about technique. That could be a better match for him.

Not surprising in the least. I loved Emmitt as a running back for us but he's just horrible on the pregame shows and such.

In Defense of Carter, he doesn't have a stuttering problem.

The guy was fun to watch on the field, and hey, who am I kidding? It was even fun to watch on the set of ESPN - I personally loved laughing at all of his gaff's. Too bad ESPN doesn't see the value in comedy relief.

Carter seems to do a good job on Inside the NFL, so I don't how he'd be worse than Emmitt. He doesn't fumble through the English language with tattered euphamisms for his co-anchors to laugh about later.

They had no choice but to get rid of him because no one can take a analyst seriously with a speech problem.
