The Cowboys will put running back Felix Jones on injured reserve today and they have signed safety Tra Battle off of San Diego's practice squad.

Battle was waived off the Chargers' active roster over the weekend and joined the practice squad Monday. Battle played in one game for the Chargers and was credited with one special teams' tackle.

Battle, 5-11, 173 pounds, spent last season on the Chargers' practice squad. At the University of Georgia from 2003-06, he had 155 tackles and eight interceptions. He is the cousin of former Cowboys defensive end Pepi Zellner.

173 lbs? Him and Ball need to be tied to the buffet table.

I don't know how you get out there with those monsters at that weight.

Me either. That was about my height and weight as a junior in high school, and I felt tiny at the time. I couldn't imagine being out on an NFL field at that size.

I think the Chargers have one of the best personnel departments out there. This was a productive guy in college whom the Chargers have kept stashed for a couple of years. Maybe there's something to him.

With Watkins and Courtney Brown appearing to level off, maybe it's time to look elsewhere for a young safety.

Anyone know anything about chargers football or Tra Battle?

I tried looking him up, he was an undrafted free agent from 2007. He was activated 11-17-2008 (last monday) from their practice squad, but I guess they tried putting him back and the cowboys picked him up? Is that how this works? I really need to understand how practice squad theft occurs lol.

Battle was 5-10 3/8 and 173 pounds coming out of college, but he might have bulked up to 174 since he's been in the NFL.

For what it's worth, Chargers fans say he's small, but he's not afraid to throw his weight around, plays with heart and hits hard.

The article is not clear. It sounds like he was on their practice squad and we signed him off of it. There is a distinct difference. If we signed him as they were trying to pass him through waivers, we are not obligated to keep him on the roster for several weeks as we would be if we signed him off their squad.

Level off? They never reached the summit. :D

I agree, though, that they should look elsewhere for young safety talent because they have none.

Maybe I just have a bad attitude but this move elicits a "meh" from me...

They waived him.

I bet we're worried about Watkins' neck again. And maybe that Courtney Brown is never going to tackle.

Plus he should know our defense since they kept the same system when Wade left.

This is what Parcells called "churning the bottom of the roster". If Tra can help bolster our special teams coverae units then I'm all for this signing. And hey, he's Peppi Zelner's cousin! WHOA! :D
