I had the good fortune to chat with former Cowboys assistant Jim Myers on Tuesday about the current team. He coached alongside Tom Landry from 1962 to 1986. Even though he'll be 87 next month, Myers said, "I'm still a Cowboys coach."
Myers, who is scheduled to undergo a knee replacement soon, watched the first three games at home and concluded, "I think this is the best Cowboys team in quite a while."
"I know a little frustration set in on the quarterback, but he'll be alright," Myers said. "I think if their secondary developed a little better, they'll have a great team. But I like the way the defensive line played, and the offensive line too. Those little running backs will go after every yard."
Myers should know about good offensive line play; he was Landry's line coach. He said linemen used to say there were three ways of doing things. "The right way, the wrong way and the Myers way," Myers said. "And if they didn't, there was the highway."
Don't expect to see Myers at any game this season, even though it's the last at Texas Stadium. He can't stand the crowds.
"I love to watch the Cowboys," Myers said. "I went out there last year for one game and we were over an hour getting into the stadium. That's the way it ought to be, though."
