Jon Kitna explained to Detroit reporters that he really didn't mean any harm when he ripped Bradie James, Terence Newman and the rest of the Cowboys' defense after the Lions' win last season.

"That was something that unfortunately has been taken as something that was serious," Kitna said. "It was something that I said to my hometown radio station after our season was over, and we were having a good time back there. It was really nothing that was a personal thing. It was just that we were trying to have fun on a radio station back there. Unfortunately it’s been used in a way that I was trying to degrade players and that's really not what it was about.”

Kitna went on to drop the classic "taken out of context" line. Click the above link and listen to the interview to judge the context for yourself.

Kitna clarifies his comments
December 5, 2007 3:06 PM

Lions quarterback Jon Kitna went on a local Seattle radio show last year and basically made fun of a Cowboys defense he'd just torched. The Cowboys haven't forgotten those comments and cornerback Terence Newman has promised to give Kitna a personal greeting. Here's what Kitna had to say on several topics:

On where the team is right now: We have to get back into the attitude that we had at the beginning of the season where it felt like we were just a swarm of bees that just kind of all moved together and were ready to attack the same thing. That's what we have to get back to. What has happened to us the last four weeks is a natural thing and you have to fight that. The natural thing is to start trying to protect your own reputation and things like that and not necessarily be sacrificial. We cannot allow that to creep in. We have to all be headed in the same direction. That is the only chance we have.

On how to get rid of that mentality they have had: I think that goes back to the leadership type of thing. Sometimes you just have to have the leaders step up and do something that grabs everybody's attention again. It's not anything that is said, it is not having a players only meeting. It's about producing on the football field in my opinion.

On whether he's aware of the reaction to comments he made on a Seattle radio station in January by several of Dallas' players: The media department here prepared me for that and told me about that. That was something that unfortunately has been taken as something that was serious. It was something that I said to my hometown radio station after our season was over, and we were having a good time back there. It was really nothing that was a personal thing. It was just that we were trying to have fun on a radio station back there. Unfortunately it's been used in a way that I was trying to degrade players and that's really not what it was about.

On if the quotes look different on paper then they were implied: Yeah. We were having a good time back there. It's my hometown radio station that I talk to frequently and things like that. I understand the radio station fodder and all that stuff. We were just trying to have a good time with it and unfortunately it was taken out of tone or the context that it was in.

On what they can take out of last year's Dallas game: 'Not a lot. They have a new coaching staff. There is not much difference between them and New England right now to be honest with you; the way they are playing and the confidence they are playing with. For us, it's a game where last year we won that game probably playing a B+ kind of game. A B+ will not win the football game for us this weekend. We're going to have to play our best game to date to beat this football team. They are playing as well as anybody you have seen this late in the season. They have a lot of confidence and the phases feed off each other."

On if practice makes them believe their "A" game is coming: We've practiced well. It's funny because sometimes the better practices we've had have not equated into the best performances on Sunday. That's unfortunate. Things happen early in football games that we are not recovering from. That is the difference from what happened early in the season and what's happening now. Practices have been very upbeat, very good. It hasn't been a practice issue in my opinion.

On the difference on this team from last year's Cowboys game to now: We have something to play for. Last year it was the end of the season and it was a long season. Right now we are backed into a corner mostly by our own doing did we back ourselves into a corner. Right now we've got to fight our way out, and earn our way right now. It is very well documented that it is not going to be easy, obviously. That being said, we feel like if we can play our A-game and get back to what we were doing early in the season where we were all headed in the same direction then we're going to be ok.

On last year's team having nothing to lose: Last year, that could be true, what you said there with nothing to lose. Last year was an epitome of our season except that we made the play after the disappointment in the fourth quarter to win the football game. That was really what the whole season was like last year. You are in a game, you are in a game and you do something great to take control of the game. Then they do something better and take back control of the game and we never recover. We recovered last year and we ended up winning that football game and I think there is a little bit to that. It is a natural thing when you get in this time of year and have a chance to get to the playoffs. It's not about guys not wanting to do it. It might be about guys wanting to do it too much. The thing that you have to understand: we can't make up for these four losses in one game. You have to go play. If you get down 14, this game is a game where you can only get seven at a time. You cannot try to go out and make big plays; you just have to make the plays that are there.

On how to make plays without WR Roy Williams: He is our best player and somebody that in this last game it really felt like that is who we were early in the game. It's going to be about guys stepping up. I'm sure Coach Martz will do a great job of trying to get guys comfortable and who know different positions.

On giving up the kickoff return TD to the Vikings after scoring an offensive touchdown: 'They made a play. They made a really good play and got the sack. It was different if we were playing at home here. When you are there it's loud and that is always going to be more difficult. Even when Hester did it here I think all it did was tie the game. There, it was like now we are down 11 and you are trying to get back in it. Those are the things that you can't allow. You just have to play each snap. That's what Coach Marinelli always talks about is just play each snap.

On how things have snowballed downhill in the losses: That is about learning how to win. We can't forget where we were last year and where this team has been for the last six or eight years or whatever. You are still trying to learn how to win. You haven't got some of the recent experiences of positive things to help you in that situation so you have to fight through it. The only thing that you can do it is with every guy fighting together.

On what it takes to get confidence back: Winning. Winning. Winning. That's it. Winning. (Within the game) just making a play. Making a play when it looks like they have momentum and you make a play and you steal momentum back from them.

On if it is only four or five plays in a game that hurt them: I think so. I just try to look at what we do offensively. This last game our first drive, on that third down play we were going to have a big play there, probably a 20-yard gain if he doesn't score. A guy gets his hand up and knocks it down and we're off the field. They go down and score a touchdown. We come back, we just miss on a touchdown and have to kick a field goal. Right at the end of the half it is 28-10 but we are moving the football down and we have a guy on the sideline and it's going to be a big gain; probably a first down on the 10-yard line if he doesn't score again to make it 28-17. A guy reaches out and gets a piece of the football and fumbles into that guy's hands. Now they are up 35-10. You go from having a chance to get it back to an 11 point game and now you are down 25. Those things are just hard to recover from."

On comments he made after the Minnesota game about everybody not being in the boat: If I say this again I am probably going to get myself in trouble. Everyone just needs to be going in the same direction. That is all.

On if he caught any flack from teammates for saying that: No. I included myself in that. I am not trying to say anything. I never said 'they,' I said 'we'. It's all of us. We have to be headed in the same direction. Without it, it is too hard to win in this league.

On if that was discussed at all this week: No. Our coach has talked to us (about getting on the same page).

On what he said: We all have to be in it together.

On if Coach Marinelli is still looking for guys who want to play: I think that is every team I have ever been on. The evaluation of: do you want to be here. That has always been the case and I don't think this is any different.

On how difficult the last four weeks have been for him personally: I just try to do my job. Sometimes with the turnovers I can help to avoid them. The sacks I can help to avoid them. There are things that I can't control and I just have to continue to play my game. If my coaches have a problem with the way I'm playing they will let me know. For the most part they like the decisions that I am making.

On if they can do anything now about the quotes about the Dallas players: Are they going to want to hit me harder? I doubt it. This is the NFL. They are good football players. Obviously they don't need any extra motivation because they are 11-1 and a good football team. That is kind of a story that exists down there that really I don't feel like is an issue because comments were taken in a way that I didn't say them.

Kitna is retracting? WOW! He must be crappin his pants in worry for this upcoming game because if he had any conficence, or balls, he'd stand by what he said.

Sounds like Kitna's reviewed game film the last couple of days and noticed that #56 isn't "lost" anymore.

Have you ever seen the movie "Little Giants?" Kitna's going to be that little kid who was yelling @ the ref to "blow the whistle" while running in circles. :)

In my book this guy went from a loud mouth to a total loser. There was not any fun smack talk in his comments either. And everyone knows that by listening to the conversation he had with the DJ. He was talking some BS and got caught.

When you are cornered, always blame media or "taken out of context" thing.

The only thing he has said that holds water.

He'd be a lot better off saying, 'yeah, I said it. I meant it mostly in fun, but I'm not backing down from any of it. We'll see what happens this weekend, but I'm going to do my best to make sure 56 looks lost again.' Put it on his team to back him up.

Yep, and Terence Newman is a pro-bowl caliber player. And guess what, he won't be seeing a whole lot of that "base 3-4" either.

They may not move the ball past the 50 yard line until after the half.

I've been anticipating this game since they posted the schedule for this year. This is one of the games I wish I could play in...

True. He should've just said, "I got caught up in our winning a game and I didn't think about the innernets capturing some things I said to a radio station 3,000 miles from Dallas. It was stupid, and I wish I hadn't said those things. But I did, and I can't take them back now."

We better not lose this game after all this, "We're going to kill them" talk... But you know, Martz can move the ball on almost anyone. We'll hit Kitna because Martz doesn't protect his QB, but we're going to give up some passes -- I hope everyone knows that.:

Pretty lame rebuttal on his part but not much more we should've expected from him...Adding fuel to the fire would've obviously made it worse and playing the 'out of context' card was his only avenue...THAT or actually apologizing which wasn't going to happen.
