DMN Blog: Houston and Miami dump former Cowboys' draft picks

I thought this was going to be a thread about Bobby Carpenter getting cut in Miami.

They are when the Cowboys draft'em. I didn't see anything positive in draft guides about Walden. And Wall? You could look at the numbers and see he wasn't capable of being a corner in the NFL. Not fast enough. I think the kid they signed to the practice squad McCann is a better prospect.

Players drafted from the 6th round and on are all considered reaches, which is why they are drafted that low. Thats why alot of those picks don't pan out. You act like Dallas is the only team that whiffs on low round draft picks. But Dallas did hit on Patrick Crayton(6th round) a few years ago, and I think they somewhat happy with their former 7th round pick Jay Ratliff.

I'm not sure how much he helped Miami quite frankly.

Walden was in Kansas City before going to Miami.

6th round picks are gambles anyway but in these 2 cases (Walden and Wall) I thought they were questionable picks at the time. I never saw much in Wall and I had never even heard of Walden. I fact, I think only Mel Kiper knew of him out of all the talking heads. We seem to do better with our 7th round picks and UDFA's.

The Walden pick had my head spinning at first because I had not heard of him. After researching him, it looked like a decent gamble because he had shown some pass rush ability as a small school DE.

You take shots when you get in the sixth and seventh rounds, and some pay off.

This year, we had two, and it looks like we'll go 1 of 2 (Young).

Last year, we had two, and we'll probably go 1 of 2 (John Phillips, Stephen Hodge) considering Hodge's knee problems.

The previous year was Walden, before that was Nick Folk and Deon Anderson ... and we got some decent years from them.

Before that year (2007), we were terrible at selecting in the sixth round: Montavious Stanley, Justin Beriault, Rob Petitti, B.J. Tucker, Zuriel Smith, Tyson Walter, Deveren Johnson, Bob Slowikowski. That's 2002 through 2006.

Maybe we need to be thankful for the success rate of late with sixth-rounders.

If the 1st through 4th is a crap shoot in the Draft then the rest is a Roulette Wheel.

Teddy Williams and McCann are alot more athletic which allows the transition to the NFL game, their physical skills give them a little better chance to succeed, at least for now.

In the bigger picture it's all about consistantly taking your shots late and in Free Agency because eventually some will hit. The Cowboys Front Office has proven this theory to be factual.

That I realize.

I know that teams don't expect starters in the 6th round.

But Dallas has with those two guys, Wall and Walden, who did not show up (well) in the pre-draft scouting books for arm-chair scouts like myself...

There were other guys left on the board who where higher rated choices.

I'm just reporting what the books were reporting. If you have a gripe, then contact those folks.

Where did this "four years" stuff come from?

Eric Walden was drafted in 2008.

You folks must be using some sort of funky calendar because mine says, "2010".

Eric Walden played in 23 games, never started a single one, had 20 tackles and 0 sacks.

And he's been cut 3 times.

Gosh what a gold strike he was for the Cowboys!

The real shame about the 6th is that a lot of teams find serviceable OL and safeties there. Those positions of course have been the hardest to develop lately.

Of the Cowboys' six draft picks, only Wall did not make the opening-day roster. Houston picked up Wall but released him today.

It was a tough day for former Cowboys' sixth-round picks. Miami released linebacker Erik Walder, a sixth-round choice in 2008.

they probably picked up wall to pick his brains....that's pretty normal in the NFL.

so you just look at those hits rather than what happens with the vast majority of 6th and 7th rounders? that's some critical thinking right there.

I had hopes for Wall even though I never saw him play in college. I bought into the hype.

What hype? I don't think I ever heard anything good about him. Sounds like a guy who never really had what it took.

One draft guide listed Wall as 5'10" and 204lbs.

Said he was built like a running back.

Speed was his weak suit... a 4.55 guy.

Based on his write-up and they portrayed him as a someone who didn't avoid contact, I immediately thought "free safety".

I was somewhat surprised that he was put a corner from the first day of camp and never tried at FS.

And who says he was some "gold strike"? Just saying that he wasn't someone who couldn't play a lick and was immediately out of the league -- which is okay for a sixth round pick.

I do think this year's sixth will be a contributor. But if he isn't, that's nothing unusual for a sixth rounder.
