Hurd makes his push

A friend of mine who grew up a Cowboys fan told me before I got here, to cover the team, in September that Sam Hurd was one of those "Training Camp Legends."


Every team has them. They produce in the summer, and level off in the fall. It's not to insinuate that they aren't good players. It's simply that, in these cases, players are made out to be a lot better than they are.


Well, Hurd's gonna get his chance to prove that he's capable of a lot more than the 19 catches he put him last year. With T.O. out this week to handle a family matter, Hurd is running as a starter this week.


He's packing 205 pounds on his 6-foot-2 frame now, and has focused on playing the game faster than he has in the past.


"The focus is speed, speed, speed and getting my weight up," Hurd said. "I (want to) play at a weight I'm comfortable at, in the 200s, where I could use my force a little bit more. I was always 190, trying to bang with everyone else. Now if I'm higher, I can give them a contest out there."

Now that's interesting. I look forward to seeing what he looks like at 205. Has the nice height but always looked like a stringbean, and not fast. If he has bulked up and added any speed it will be interesting to see how he does.

Would be surprised if he can add any speed. However, by adding more size/strength to physique his usefulness could significantly increase. Lack of speed means he probably can't get the separation a QB wants, but if he's now got the size to take on defenders & use his body to gain separation then he could indeed become a much better WR that Romo can rely on. After all, TO isn't a great WR cause he's a record breaking speedy guy, it's because he's knows how to use his body to get to make the catch & then utilize the speed he has to take it to the house. At this point I still think he's more then capable of becoming a very good #3 WR replacing Crayton some day but he's very young & who knows. He's sure an extremely hard worker & that paid dividends for TO.

this could turn into a fun thread if everyone lists their favorite practice all pros from the past decade or so. James Whalen automatically comes to mind, followed by Randall Williams. Currently, it's gotta be Pat McQuistan.

Hurd has also contributed in the regular season with limited reps. His numbers are pretty similar to Crayton's in his first two seasons.

I think he is good as a #3 at best. Put him as a #2 and we are in big trouble. He just seems too slow on the field and Crayton isn't exactly a speed demon. Take T.O. out and you saw what it did to our offense. I am much higher on Stanback and Austin. Though I hope you prove me wrong Sam.

Training camp guys who do not produce; OTA guys that do not produce. Been there, done that. None of it means a thing untill they put up numbers in a regular season game.

He is only 23 years old has plays with a lot of heart and can make some acrobatic snags.

Dont count him out on developing into a really good receiver.
