I don't know for a fact that James Marten will be cut, but the trade for OG Montrae Holland certainly isn't a good sign for last season's third-round pick.

Marten, drafted as a right tackle, was moved to guard this spring. All you need to know about his development is that when Kyle Kosier went down, Marten was not one of the three backups the coaches considered as replacements.

The 6-7, 315-pound Marten is consistently overpowered at the point of attack. When the Hard Knocks cameras showed OL coach Hudson Houck saying a lineman was "a little light in the [rear]," I assumed he was referring to Marten.

The Cowboys didn't hesitate to cut ties with second-rounder Jacob Rogers or third-rounder Stephen Peterman when it was clear those O-linemen were bad picks. Odds are the same thing is about to happen to Marten.

On a related note, the trade for Holland isn't exactly a ringing endorsement for the rest of the backup OL, as JJT blogged.

I always wondered about this pick because he was extremely weak at the NFL combine. Everyone said that he was quick and that the weakness issue would be resolved in the weight room. Well, it looks like he is still weak and unable to handle players at this level. So did the strength and conditioning coach fail us...did Marten have poor work habits....or was he simply a bust from day one...

If this is indeed the case, I'd be glad to get his punk *** outa here sooner rather than later. No wasted time.

Some people just dont have enough natural strength....

He also didnt have enough lead in his butt to move people.

Maybe with those quick feet.....he can catch on as a TE somewhere....

Yay! More hand-wringing and kvetching about the quality of backups!!!

This actually really excites me. I am so happy to see all the whiners talking about this!!!! It shows just how far this team has come!!!!!

A half dozen seasons ago, we didn't have starting-caliber QBs, RBs, WRs, or defense.

Now the only thing the chicken littles can ***** about is that our backups are not pro bowl quality.

Life is good.

i was thinking berger would get cut. since they'd have a lot of guards

kosier
procter
holland

the backup tackles
mcquistan
free
marten

of course kosier and davis can play tackle.

still seems like giving up on an offensive lineman pretty early after just one year.

I wondered if Houck wasn't talking about Procter when he made that comment? I think there is a good chance he's the odd man out if Berger or Holland can do the job at center.

I'm blathering about all the moronic hand wringing about whether Marten, McQ, Free and Berger have shown enough and this was a panic move.

I'm not whining at all. I like the move and continue to think we have an impeccable roster.

I just think all the off-season bull****---about whether our 5th and 6th WRs were showing enough, complaining about this and that backup not pushing for more time (b/c the starter is great!!), and now that our backup guards may not have wowed the coaches enough---is just laughable stupidity.

This team is a deep as you can get in a salary cap era. If you have problems with this roster, then you're incorrigible.

Interesting take, but I just dont' see it....the hand-wringing that is. I think most people (aside from WR depth) are pretty amped on this roster.

As a matter of fact, the only concern I have about this team right now is special team coverage, and I'm not sure whether or not that'd be improved by other players. I think the talent is there, we just need someone to get that talent out of the players, and put it on the field.

Nothing wrong with improving depth though, and I think that's what we've done here.

ON second thought, I take it back. I was a part of the last few game threads.....those area miserable experience. Not worth an commenting on for the most part.

Sorry if I don't think this team is 'perfect' or 'beyond improvement'.

I think this was a good move and if current backups can't play they don't need to be here.

And given that the starting guard is out for several weeks, I think it does matter.

Guess the Cowboys don't like any of their backup guards

What other impression could you get after the Broncos traded guard Montrae Holland to Dallas for a fifth-round choice in the 2010 NFL Draft. Holland, a sixth-year player, joined the Broncos as an unrestricted free agent in 2007, after spending his first four NFL seasons (2003-06) with New Orleans.

To me, it looks like they consider Pat McQuistan and Joe Berger to be busters at guard. What do you think?

And what does it say that Dallas has spent a lot of draft picks on offensive lineman over the past few years and they don't have a single backup good enough to help them for a month or so, while Kyle Kosier nurses a foot injury?
