Tim MacMahon E-mail News tips
I don't know for a fact that James Marten will be cut, but the trade for OG Montrae Holland certainly isn't a good sign for last season's third-round pick.
Marten, drafted as a right tackle, was moved to guard this spring. All you need to know about his development is that when Kyle Kosier went down, Marten was not one of the three backups the coaches considered as replacements.
The 6-7, 315-pound Marten is consistently overpowered at the point of attack. When the Hard Knocks cameras showed OL coach Hudson Houck saying a lineman was "a little light in the [rear]," I assumed he was referring to Marten.
The Cowboys didn't hesitate to cut ties with second-rounder Jacob Rogers or third-rounder Stephen Peterman when it was clear those O-linemen were bad picks. Odds are the same thing is about to happen to Marten.
On a related note, the trade for Holland isn't exactly a ringing endorsement for the rest of the backup OL, as JJT blogged.
