DMN Blog: Jerry Jones on Miles Austin: He's going nowhere...won't use franchise tag

I trust that Jerry will take care of Miles, he has shown it time and again he will take care of key players. I have no reason to doubt that Jerry will step up and get Miles signed to a long term deal

Jimmy had a lot to do with that since he did not put a big premium on LB in the 4-3 defense. Jimmy had said before that the investment needed to be made on the defensive front and secondary

Miles Austin is a restricted free agent, and we know Cowboys owner Jerry Jones wants to keep him. But they will not put the franchise tag on him; they will probably not sign him to a long-term deal. Instead, the Cowboys will put a $3.168 million tender offer on him.
If another team wants to jump in, they can try to nab the receiver with a bigger offer -- one the Cowboys can match. However, if the Boys don't match it, the other team would give up a first- and third-round pick as compensation.
The Cowboys don't think any team will give up a first- and third-round pick for Austin, but the Fort Worth Star-Telegram's Clarence Hill writes: "The strategy seems tenuous considering Austin's sensational season and the number of teams, including the Miami Dolphins and former Cowboys coach Bill Parcells, looking for a No. 1 receiver."
Hill might have a point: 25-year-old franchise receivers aren't so easy to find, and outside of Dez Bryant, this year's draft prospects aren't world-class. If nothing else, an offer would force the Cowboys to pay Austin more, leaving less money to improve elsewhere.

There ya go...

no way Jerry let's Austin get away

he literally saved our season.

This can't be. Mr. Hair Piece told us that Dallas would fret over having to pay Miles with all that money guaranteed to Roy.

If the Dolphins come after Miles then Jerry is going to have to match the offer no matter what the amount. This is why I was surprised to hear they had no interest in using the franchise tag.

As always, teams have the right to change their mind. We were fretting about this after the 2007 season with Hamlin, said we wouldn't franchise him, then they franchised him anyway and then got him a long-term deal.

Here's hoping, (knowing) this won't turn out the way that did....

I have to think real hard with that offer

we get the 12 pick & 73 pick

plus we already got the 27 pick

we could get R McClain or a top Tackle

then pick up Iupati at 27

This is the logic that escapes our Front Office. I do honestly scratch my head sometimes at their stupidity. Just use the franchise tag and the case is almost closed. Don't let some team poison pill you into a terrible contract in order to keep Miles on the team when you can set those terms on your own.

If they really want to do a long-term deal and avoid using the franchise tag, then just get him signed this week.

I don't worry about poison pills, because the player has to agree to the contract.

I don't see Austin agreeing to a contract that has a poison pill in it that the Cowboys can't match. And if he does, then he doesn't want to be here.

I do agree that Dallas could be setting itself up to have to give Austin a much worse contract than what it could pay by franchising him. I'd rather them tag him then try to work it out on their own terms.

Here's another topping for the pie:

-- Dolphins Unlikely to Poach Miles Austin from Cowboys --

Fri Feb 19, 2010 --from FFMastermind.com
The Dallas Morning News reports Miami could make a run at WR Miles Austin. Bill Parcells certainly knows the talent, as do HC Tony Sparano and everybody else with the Dolphins. Miami needs a No. 1 wide receiver for QB Chad Henne. However, there's a feeling Parcells would not poach Austin because he has a great relationship with Jerry Jones. There is a code that certain guys have in the league and that code played a part in the Cowboys not going after PK Adam Vinatieri a few years ago because of Parcells’ tie to HC Bill Belichick. Miami would have to give up the 12th and 73rd picks to make a play for Austin. Would you take that as compensation? Heck no. The Cowboys put a lot of years of investment into Austin, do not have a suitable replacement and the draft is always a crapshoot when it comes to receivers.

The issue with the poison pill is that it is usually something that works greatly to the advantage of the player that signs the deal. So it really has nothing to do with disloyalty on the part of Miles - it is just good business practice on the part of his agent.

Dallas FO is playing with fire here if they don't franchise him and don't work on a long-term deal. They are almost inviting some team to come in and poison pill them and they will deserve it for their own stupidity.

I also got a chance to talk today with Pat Kirwan and Tim Ryan about this issue on NFL SiriusXM Radio...

Miles Austin talk - Feb 17

If the Dolphins come after Miles then Jerry is going to have to match the offer no matter what the amount. This is why I was surprised to hear they had no interest in using the franchise tag.

It's too bad Kirwan isn't still in the league so we could make some trades with him.
