Jones, Garrett scheduled to meet

Todd Archer

Jason Garrett will see just how persuasive Jerry Jones can be.

According to multiple sources, Garrett was scheduled to meet with the Cowboys owner and general manager Wednesday night after returning from Atlanta, where he had a second interview with Falcons officials about becoming their next head coach.

Having officially lost assistant head coach Tony Sparano to Miami on Wednesday, the Cowboys have a sense of urgency to keep Garrett, who completed his first year as their offensive coordinator.

On Tuesday, Baltimore offered its head coaching job to Garrett, according to sources, but he still kept his commitment to meet with the Falcons on Wednesday.

Jones has proven to be persuasive to coaches in the past. In 2004, Mike Zimmer (Nebraska) and Sean Payton (Oakland Raiders) turned down chances to be head coaches and returned to the Cowboys with $1 million salaries after meeting with Jones.

I have to believe he is staying. Who goes back to your old team to talk to the owner after being offered a job by two teams that don't want him to leave.

I agree. If you really, really wanted to be a head coach you would probably take it no questions asked. I guess we will all find out in the near future.

oh yes, Jerry will per$$$uade him...;)

Garrett's not going anywhere.

Baltimore has a great personnel department and an owner with deep pockets and he left. Art Blank is no pushover either, and I bet he offered even more than Baltimore.

I think Garrett:

1. Knows he has a good thing in Dallas right now.
2. Feels he does not have enough experience yet to be a prime time coach.
3. Wants another Super Bowl ring and knows Dallas is closer to that then either Atlanta or Baltimore.

I think JJ hands him a bag of cash under the table, winks and says he hears 2009 is a great year for Wine's.

Both Baltimore and Atlanta, especially the latter, are in BIG shambles. No QB, and pretty much old and talent-less in ALOT of key positions. And not to mention too the morale is very bad in both places(with alot of in-house fighting and meddling owners going on in recent years).

It's obvious Garrett sees this, and also sees how Dallas is *this* close.

Can't believe that Garrett didn't immediately accept the "coveted" position of HC of the Baltimore Ravens. What must he be thinking?

And what was there not to immediately like about the Atlanta Falcons job? Obviously the young, relatively inexperienced Garrett might not be ready to coach this great franchise.

Sometimes a really smart OC knows when NOT to accept the first head coaching job offers he gets. I wouldn't be surprised if Garrett accepted both interviews for the experience but also to present the market value for his services to Jerry Jones. Assume Jerry will pay Garrett enough to keep him (just slightly less then Phillips) but also assure him he will be the next head coach of the Cowboys. Hopefully the Cowboys/Garrett will issue a statement on Thursday that Garrett will remain the Cowboys OC but the title (now that Sparano is gone) of Asst Head Coach will be added to his responsibilities.

Fandom aside, waiting a couple more years to be the HC of the Dallas Cowboys has to be light years better than landing in ATL or BAL.

Garrett will stay he wants to get that sour taste out his mouth

Maybe. But, realistically, how man coaches in the league DON'T end a year with a sour taste in their mouths?

If Jerry had discussed the possibility of Garrett being the HC of the future when he hired him as the OC, then I would expect Garrett to at least give Jones an opportunity to match offers before accepting anything from another team.

I doubt that the conversation is entirely about money. Garrett knows that Jerry will take care of the money. That isn't the issue and will never be the issue for guys who Jerry wants.

Jason Garrett is giving Jerry a chance to sell a vision for the future of the Cowboys and a vision for how JG is best served as part of that vision.

This is where Jerry shines. Can you imagine trying to sell the Falcons' job as a "great" opportunity? Can you imagine trying to sell the bits and pieces of the Ravens' offense? He's got a good product to sell and I see JG as mostly sold already. The financial end will take no time at all to work out.
