DMN Blog: Looking at Stanback

All the WRs came in under Parcells watch. I think he wanted the WRs to be capable blockers to play his brand of football.

All NFL teams wants that.

These guys are Pros. If your a pro you should be pretty good at everything.

Also a receiver who will block says a lot about the guys work ethic.

Most NFL receivers are willing to block.

The fact of the matter is nobody knows what's going to happen yet. Marques Colston was a 7th round pick, which is close enough to an UDFA but he made an impact as a rookie. Stuff happens, it's the NFL, you just never know until training camp and the season starts.

You're right nobody knows, but Colston is by far the exception not the rule. The Saints simply got lucky, he was nearly the last player taken and even then, they at least invested a pick in him.

I'm worried that Jerry is taking the approach to WR's that he took to CB's, which worked out pretty badly since by the time we realized it was a real problem it was too late.

I think we really do take at least 1 WR early next draft, I'm just hoping it doesn't become a problem this year. I would much rather we spent draft picks on a WR than to pay 70 million next off season to bring in someone that will cripple us financially. We already have a bunch of guys to resign, will we even have the money to pay a guy like Roy Williams if he comes loose?

Honestly, I would rather try to pay a free agent wideout than draft one in almost every situation. The percentage of wide receivers drafted who bust out is insane. Just thinking of 1st round picks lately, guys like Troy Williamson, Mike Williams, Reggie Brown, the list goes on. The list of wide receivers who actually turn into good starters is extremely short.

Absolutely, but there are plenty of busts in the NFL draft period, not just at the WR spot. There are guys that stick though, and it's about finding those guys. Good WR's don't get into the NFL on their own, they are drafted like everyone else.

Yeah, I can't disagree with you there. I'm just wary of drafting a wide receiver. Honestly, if Roy Williams or Anquan Boldin either could've been had for a 1st, I would do it in a heartbeat. Obviously that isn't going to happen, but here's hoping Roy ends up wanting to come here as a FA if Detroit doesn't Franchise him.

I didn't say he wasn't doing anything, he made it sound like he was basically running with the scrubs and getting run through group drills. I think many of us expected he was being prepped to make an impact sooner rather than later, hence Jerrys confidence we were fine at WR and would find no one better or able to contribute sooner than what we had.

But it looks like they were taking the safer crawl before you can walk method, which is probably better but also means we shouldn't be expected much more than typical rookie production from him anytime soon. In other words, he will not be our savior if something goes wrong.

If that was the case and he was putting moves on the Dallas DBs anyway, and getting rave reviews from the coaches, he may be very far advanced this year when he gets individual attention.

That is comforting, but in general, it's not smart to have to depend on free agency or even worse the trade market to upgrade and find starting talent.

Time will tell, but I don't understand how failing to challenge any of your young talent with healthy competition via the draft is a good thing. I also appreciate the weak WR draft, but that again is an excuse. We sound awfully sure about our evaluation of the group as a whole when we completely ignore it.

We paid more attention to second string tight end, which is an infinitely less important position.

Don't you think the young talent already on board challenges each other?
Who do you think could have been drafted to mount a stiffer challenge?

Or else picked up as UDFAs.

There simply aren't many top tier receivers that were undrafted, and the number of #1 receivers that were undrafted is statistically negligible.

If BP can draft Skyler Green in the 4th and have almost everyone defend that pick to the hills... No plastic off Jerrys face!!!

So these players that are so attractive in free agency were once drafted, were they not?

It just comes down to having faith in those making the drafting decisions.

As far as your comfort level in regard to free agent WRs, go ask the Buccaneers about that philosophy while mentioning the name Alvin Harper.

Neither approach is better than the other. It only matters who is making the decisions in regards to the personnel.
