Mack Brown: Roy Williams will 'be as good as any receiver that we've ever seen'

Tim MacMahon/Blogger

Texas coach Mack Brown believes ex-Longhorn Roy Williams will bounce back in a big way from his miserable 2008 season. I believe Brown's comments about the coachable wide receiver, which he made at the Big 12 media day, come close to Jerry-level hyperbole.

It's one thing to believe that Williams will be a legitimate No. 1 receiver. Maybe even a Pro Bowler. But among the best of all-time? Wow.

Mack Brown: Roy Williams will have a great year with Cowboys

Mike Heika/Reporter Bio | E-mail | News tips

Texas coach Mack Brown was asked if he thinks former Longhorns receiver Roy Williams can be a No. 1 receiver with the Cowboys and said this:

``Yes, Roy Williams is one of the great athletes I've ever been around. He's really a good person. He's been in a tough situation in Detroit. I think when he came into Dallas last year, he came in late and didn't really know the system. I think we'll see Roy Williams have a breakout year and be as good as any receiver that we've ever seen.''

Every time I read the phrase "coachable wide receiver" or "coachable Roy Williams", I want to punch Tim McMahon right in his stupid face.

It's as tired as JFE's "T-Faux."

I'm confident Williams will show why he was selected as a 1st rd pick. I also think he will be out to prove a lot of people wrong about him. The guy has great size, speed and hands. While he is not the smoothest of rout runners the guy can play and I think a full offseason with Romo and a better understanding of the offense will make a very big difference.

I think we could do without the sage advice from Mack Brown and make up our own minds. I still recall how his commentary about Greg Ellis worked out.

He said that Ellis was a good football player and such a good person he would trust him to babysit his children.

Sounds right on the mark as far as his character.

You are not alone. It is as if he is telling a dumb joke that only he is laughing at. He is such an idiot.

Just make sure you pay him enough and never, ever hire a different babysitter.

All he would do is whine and cry ..... he would always show up for work and work hard.

Make no mistake ..... I was tired of Ellis and his Eeyore routine as well ..... just saying that Mack Brown gave us a good assessment of him.

You miss the time he claimed his achilles still wasn't right until he got some more money up front?

I remember him worrying about voiding an insurance policy if he had played and gotten hurt.

Jerry took care of him by replacing what he would have lost and he played.

That was a private business deal between him and Jerry.

None of my business.

His character was so sterling that he was one of, if not the biggest, chronic worry wart and complainer in our locker room for the last decade.

I don't think McMahon is the only one dropping 'coachable' at every oppportunity. It seems to have caught on in totally jerky fashion. It is totally rude and over the top; it has gotten under my skin almost more than anything else the media has pulled in the last few years....... I think because it is such a sneaky slap at a player who has not done a dang thing wrong.

Except mention on several occasions exactly how coachable he is.

Perhaps it is a Roy Williams' joke in response. But he hasn't done much to diffuse what was a lame jab anyways. If he didn't acknowledge it, they wouldn't continue with it.

In general, Williams' response to the media is what fuels their snarkiness.

His best approach is not to throw chum in the water if he doesn't want to deal with sharks. He seems to be learning that the press in Dallas isn't the same as Detroit.

The last decade? Or when he started getting older and worried about his spot?

Like I said before ..... I was tired of his act just like you were ...... but the guy was a good football player and a class human being just like Mack said.

Mack was not describing the bitter older multiple time injured player at the end of his disappointing career, he was describing the kid who was in his prime and had visions of Superbowls dancing in his head.
