*We got our first glimpse of the Cowboys' version of the Wildcat. They're calling the formation Razorback. Patrick Crayton takes the shotgun snap with Felix Jones motioning across the backfield and Tony Romo split out wide. Much more to come in another post later.

*Felix Jones spent some time as a punt returner during the special teams portion of the workout. Based on what we saw, I wouldn't count on Jones filling that role during the regular season. He dropped the ball the first time he had the coverage team coming at him. He misjudged the next two, causing him to backpedal and catch the ball over his head. Jones acknowledged that catching a punt is much more difficult than catching a kickoff.

*Sixth-round pick John Phillips lined up as an H-back in a three-tight end package. Martellus Bennett, whom Jerry Jones raved about today, isn't comfortable lining up in the backfield. If Phillips can play that role, it gives the Cowboys versatility with their three-TE packages.

*Coachable WR Roy Williams and Tony Romo didn't appear to be on the same page today. After Romo dumped off a pass in the flat to Witten, Williams made sure to let his QB know he was open on an out route on opposite side of the field. Williams waved his hands after the play and shrieked, "Yee-yee! Yee-yee! Yee-yee!" while strolling back to the huddle. During red-zone drills later, Romo zipped a pass too high for Williams to handle on a crossing route in the front of the end zone.

*Romo had a rough early portion of the practice. During team drills, he missed an open Witten three times -- leading him too far on a seam route once, skipping an out and throwing another out high and behind his buddy. That combo got clicking later in practice, when Witten caught a handful of passes, highlighted by a seam route for a TD between safeties Ken Hamlin and Gerald Sensabaugh.

*Third-round pick Jason Williams, who split time with Bobby Carpenter in the sub packages, earned on-field praise from LB coach Reggie Herring for his work in coverage. Veteran Keith Brooking filled in for honeymooning Bradie James as the other LB in the nickel package.

*We saw more of fourth-round QB Stephen McGee than we had in the other media-access OTA workouts combined. McGee showed his mobility and arm strength by avoiding the rush and firing a bullet over the middle to TE Scott Chandler. He also hit Witten with a rope on a 15-yard out. McGee, who got most of his reps during a passing drill that pitted the TEs and RBs vs. the LBs and safeties only threw the ball more than 15 yards downfield once. That pass sailed out of bounds. It was intended for John Phillips, who was well covered by S Pat Watkins (playing Cover 2) on the sideline.

*CB Terence Newman sat out today because of a minor quad injury. Wade Phillips said Newman probably would have practiced with such an injury during the regular season. Phjllips declined to detail every injury, but he said they were mostly minor leg injury, including a strain for WR Miles Austin.

what's the deal with Tony...too much boating? it should be easier to get in sync with a wr like Roy than any other.

They reported a lot more miscues with Witten, its otas; they need this time to get their timing down.

Terence Injury Newman
I seriously think this guy may have worked out too much for his own good. Parcells always raved about how he was constantly in the gym. Seems like he is just a tightly wound ball of muscle now and any false move results in a pull, strain, or tear.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Parcells said he was the first guy back in the weight room after the season ended and they practically couldn't get him out of there. Maybe he needs to ease up some on all but the core lifts.

Still... I bet this is as much about getting the young guys more reps as anything. It's not like TN doesn't know the defense.

In his defense, rolling out of bed can be very treacherous.

his diet probably isn't the best, he's probably suffering from muscle fatigue

Actually I'm not worried about the injuries now, but I am concerned about more than one having a minor leg pull. They should be warmed up properly and stretched enough to avoid those.

I'm on the fence with Newman. One side of me sees a guy that started 4 straight seasons without missing time with injury. Then the other side sees a guy on the wrong side of 30, that has very pesky injuries take their toll each year.

I'm not. Bet the farm in Vegas, he'll miss time this year. One word- FRAGILE

Nobody thinks it's weird that Crayton is lining up as the QB in the Razorback? I realize he was a former QB, but he ain't exactly the fastest or quickest threat back there. Isn't the idea that he can run it himself or hand it off or throw it? I can see the handoff and throw thing working, but don't see defenses worrying too much about Crayton running with it.

Crayton is pretty agile, and like the coaches said the other day, he can break tackles

when you have a WC QB, you want a guy who always falls forward when he runs the ball

Stanback is definitely the better athlete, and much faster, but the dude is made out of glass, and he's hurt recuperating right now anyways

Maybe it was TO wearing a Roy 11 Jersey! hahaha. One play...its all it is, just one play. One play does not a trend make.
