*We got our first glimpse of the Cowboys' version of the Wildcat. They're calling the formation Razorback. Patrick Crayton takes the shotgun snap with Felix Jones motioning across the backfield and Tony Romo split out wide. Much more to come in another post later.
*Felix Jones spent some time as a punt returner during the special teams portion of the workout. Based on what we saw, I wouldn't count on Jones filling that role during the regular season. He dropped the ball the first time he had the coverage team coming at him. He misjudged the next two, causing him to backpedal and catch the ball over his head. Jones acknowledged that catching a punt is much more difficult than catching a kickoff.
*Sixth-round pick John Phillips lined up as an H-back in a three-tight end package. Martellus Bennett, whom Jerry Jones raved about today, isn't comfortable lining up in the backfield. If Phillips can play that role, it gives the Cowboys versatility with their three-TE packages.
*Coachable WR Roy Williams and Tony Romo didn't appear to be on the same page today. After Romo dumped off a pass in the flat to Witten, Williams made sure to let his QB know he was open on an out route on opposite side of the field. Williams waved his hands after the play and shrieked, "Yee-yee! Yee-yee! Yee-yee!" while strolling back to the huddle. During red-zone drills later, Romo zipped a pass too high for Williams to handle on a crossing route in the front of the end zone.
*Romo had a rough early portion of the practice. During team drills, he missed an open Witten three times -- leading him too far on a seam route once, skipping an out and throwing another out high and behind his buddy. That combo got clicking later in practice, when Witten caught a handful of passes, highlighted by a seam route for a TD between safeties Ken Hamlin and Gerald Sensabaugh.
*Third-round pick Jason Williams, who split time with Bobby Carpenter in the sub packages, earned on-field praise from LB coach Reggie Herring for his work in coverage. Veteran Keith Brooking filled in for honeymooning Bradie James as the other LB in the nickel package.
*We saw more of fourth-round QB Stephen McGee than we had in the other media-access OTA workouts combined. McGee showed his mobility and arm strength by avoiding the rush and firing a bullet over the middle to TE Scott Chandler. He also hit Witten with a rope on a 15-yard out. McGee, who got most of his reps during a passing drill that pitted the TEs and RBs vs. the LBs and safeties only threw the ball more than 15 yards downfield once. That pass sailed out of bounds. It was intended for John Phillips, who was well covered by S Pat Watkins (playing Cover 2) on the sideline.
*CB Terence Newman sat out today because of a minor quad injury. Wade Phillips said Newman probably would have practiced with such an injury during the regular season. Phjllips declined to detail every injury, but he said they were mostly minor leg injury, including a strain for WR Miles Austin.
