There's plenty of talk on the blog about what to do with Roy Williams, the safety. The easy answer is to cut him and move on. But Williams has expressed a interest in staying in Dallas. Williams' agent Jordan Woy would like to meet with the Cowboys regarding a new deal of some sort.

But if the Cowboys move away from Williams, that means you have to move Anthony Henry to safety, right? Well, unless you believe Mike Jenkins or Orlando Scandrick is ready to take over the other corner spot opposite Terence Newman.

Is Ken Hamlin ready to move to the strong safety spot which would allow Henry to become a free safety?

The Cowboys also have free agent safety Keith Davis out there. He wasn't bad at safety with Williams out due to a broken forearm. But Davis isn't the long-term answer. Is Pat Watkins ready to take over at free safety?
Probably not.

And let's not talk about Courtney Brown. Dallas should keep Williams and give him one more chance to prove himself.

Or maybe they should cut him. But if they do, the Cowboys better have a solid plan in place.

How could any editer read that and say, "yeah. Strong stance, well written, insightful. you earned your >100K salary if you keep up that up" ?

That is pathetic

I say cut Roy. Scandrick or Jenkins can be the # 2 CB, if you want to move Henry to FS, or you can leave Henry at CB and draft somebody better than Roy at SS.

I'd be willing to work on a compromise contract which gives Roy Williams the opportunity to stay with the Cowboys and redeem himself.

This article seems to paint a different picture than quotes I've read where Roy still says he doesn't fit the 3-4 defense.

But if he wants to be here and the price is reasonable for a 'prove yourself' year, I think I'd like to see him get the chance.

Henry,Davis,Watkins and Brown are not the answers we need at SS. Hamlin will continue to get worked as SS and Henry has no tackling or coverage skills. Your just asking for trouble with Henry still on the team. This team needs to draft.....well..look at my sig.

Guess they can have an idea of what to do with him, and the other safeties, now but not act a certain way until they go through FA and the draft. Kind of a captain obvious type comment but no more than the blog article.:D

?

I think Roy Williams38 is still the best safety on this team, warts and all. I wouldn't be wanting to send him packing as much as I would want to re-do his contract and develop some youth.

so if we cut Roy(which I think we should) and move Henry to fs(which I think we shouldn't) who plays safety once Henry gets hurt cause you know he will.

COMPLETLEY AGREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe that is not saying much.

The play of EVERY Safety on this team last year was abysmal. Listen Safeties get beat....if they didn't they would be CBs. So please save all of the "Roy can't cover" replies. Maybe being injured and sitting back and watching this train wreck has forced Roy to re-dedicate himself to football. Their will be an easy way for the Cowboys to tell if Roy wants to be a winner and wants to win as a Dallas Cowboy. His weight. Too often he has to go on some crash diet right before training camp to show up in half way decent shape. If Roy spends the next 6 months re-shaping his body...that will be a great sign that he has sharpened his focus and is no longer trying to get by on his reputation. No one is saying he has too look like TO. He is not a tall guy...maybe 6'0". Nor is his body type conducive for him to become ripped. But there are plenty of short guys who are toned and powerful. Heck Ray Lewis is not tall...but his dedication allows him to carry 260 pounds on a 6'1" frame because of dedication to his craft. That is the FIRST step to Roy showing he wants to be a football player again.

I think we are arguing about the same thing:D . I dont even want Henry on this team next year, let alone playing FS.

Yes safeties do get beat from time to time, but generally by Wide Receivers. Roy is consistently getting beat by Tight Ends, and Fullbacks. I bet if you lined Flozell up in the slot, he could beat Roy on a double move.

Roy was cooked years ago. Everyone just can't get the visions of Roy's rookie year out of their head, because we need a guy like THAT Roy so badly.

We can try all the new schemes and 1st and 2nd down packages and talk more about getting him near the LOS and all that stuff we have been saying seemingly since Woody retired. But at the end of the day even at a reduced salary he is a JAG at best who has produced nothing in years. And as a LBer he will be worse.

The dropoff was barely noticeable with Killah in there this year, and that's saying something considering that Davis was a safety cut by talent-starved Miami.

As a side note, I'd pay to see Flozell even attempt a double move.

Wait scratch that, he's had enough knee problems...

Would you honestly put money on that? honestly?

Well the DMN is getting cost-conscious so I guess something's gotta give. Plus being the only newspaper of consequence in town doesn't hurt. ;)

The Dallas Cowboys look like a mess. They just under-achieved. Furthermore, the team has averaged 10.1 wins since 2005. The mode win is 9. I would hope Jerry Jones would use some fiscal discipline when it comes to the over priced veterans. He didn't mind forcing Dan Reeves' hand. We'll see. I think he will do it. If he does, these guys are gone:

Greg Ellis
Roy Williams
Anthony Henry
Bobby "Barbie" Carpenter

Why am I going to keep over priced veterans on the team, when I have or can get their younger replacements and plug them in?

This isn't a tough thing to do. The draft and undrafted free agents will give you depth.

I know Roy Williams has many fans out there, but he just complained about the scheme (for stopping the run) not fitting hm. He's not gettng any faster, and his coverage skills will never be great. I know it isn't popular to many, but it is what it is. I don't think he will be willing to get cut and resign. Plus, he isn't a linebacker.
