When last we left you Tuesday, we promised to share the takes of ESPN's Eddie Werder and Cowboys voice Brad Sham on the subject of Marion "The Solitarian" Barber.

Why Barber and the media? Well, we thought it odd that after Barber's monster game Sunday, NBC didn't even bother to ask to interview him. It chose instead Tony Romo and Jay Ratliff. So why not Barber?

Well, he doesn't like to be interviewed.

Recall in yesterday's (Part 1), Troy Aikman said he would have loved to have had Barber as a teammate, but when it comes to being an interview subject: not so much.

Here's two more thoughts:

Werder: "He's a genial guy but doesn't produce sound bites...If he set the NFL single game rushing record, I wouldn't ask for a 1-on-1 interview with him coming off the field. That's not a criticism, it's a reality...He's not trying to manipulate anybody. That's just the way he is."

Sham: "He's been on the post-game show with us and last year he did a show with us at Akin Ayodele's restaurant. Whenever he has been on, he has been better than he thought. He is by far not the worst guest we have ever had. He is just very shy among people he doesn't know."

He's just a shy guy, but I have seen him interviewed more than once. So he does cooperate sometimes.

So leave the guy alone to do what he wants. It's not hurting anyone.

I cant stand Ed Werder. Words cannot fathom my distrust/distaste for him. Wah Wah T.O. wont answer my questions so I will act like a derelict to the Barbarian.

He's a rock star, just put him on that stage anyway you can get him up there! But just remember, afterwards he'll be so drunk with shy he isn't going to talk.

Werder is basically admitting that he isn't interested in a person and the truth about that person, he only wants a sound bite that he can exploit and blow out of proportion. I applaud Owens for never answering his questions.

Crucify a guy because he won't talk to the media. What a joke.

Anyone think the media would care about what Barber has to say if TO was acting a fool?

They are so desperate for something they have resorted to bashing good guys because they don't speak enough.

Personally, I love that about Barber...Not a rah rah media guy who inflates his ego and seeks the limelight...I much prefer the old school athlete who does their job and doesn't draw attention for every little positive they perform on the field of play

Exactly...Media want a 'story' and by story I mean they want something they can entertain with rather than let the play speak for itself...That's what sports 'journalism' has turned into, sensationalized tabloid banter...I miss Fred Hickman :(

How many of those old school athletes would we have seen a different side of if the media frenzy surrounding football was what it is today? I think it would have been dramatically different. That kind of attention changes people. You didn't hear alot from these old school types simply because the medium did not exist, not because they are reclusive saints.

I think that bears thinking about when we criticize today's athletes.

don't expect this clear logic to go over too well with our hard-headed old school golden era everything-was-better-in-my-day posters.

At the end of the day, everybody can only exert control over themselves and how they conduct themselves...If you leave it up to 'But he did this' or 'But he said that', you'd have everyone acting like an idiot

Call it old school or call it whatever, I call it maturity

I have no idea how that relates to what I just said, but ok.

My theory is that there were just as many egotistic blowhards, showboats, and criminals and drunks back in the days of yore. You just had no idea they exist to the extent they do today because the coverage is much more extensive today than it was in olden days. It's all the same, there's just much more exposure today.

I haven't suggested that these sorts of athletes or people didn't exist at other times...I have stated that regardless of the era or the attention from the media, mature people conduct themselves in a mature manner

So whether there is an increase or decrease of it from times of yore, maturity in how you conduct yourself is still possible today...Case in point, Barber...I much prefer that sort of athlete to the guy who loses his mind everytime he makes a tackle much less the need to provide soundbites

that is spot on sp.

There is no doubt, especially in the 70s for crying out loud with all the drugs and free love going around. Not to mention steroids and what some of the guys in the league were doing in the offseason.

Cliff harris, charlie watters and a few other cowboys of that era used to race dirtbikes and hit jumps on their days off during the season.

can you imagine that doofus mike florio with pictures of Charlie smoking and drinking old milwaukee cans while riding a dirtbike in the woods, on his day off the week of a game!!!!!!
