Mayock explains McFadden vs. Mendenhall

NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock surprised a lot of people by declaring Illiinois' Rashard Mendenhall the best back in the draft.

Mayock, however, isn't just trying to be controversial by ranking Arkansas' Darren McFadden second. He backs up his opinion with highlights in a convincing manner right here.

You can't just dismiss Mayock's take based on conventional NFL wisdom that McFadden is the draft's best back. Nobody blinked when the Jets used the third overall pick on Blair Thomas, but I'm rather certain the Emmitt Smith kid drafted 14 picks later ended up being a better back.

Mayock acknowledges that McFadden will be the first back off the board, and Jerry willing, he'll be long gone by the time the Cowboys get on the clock. Cowboy fans should be thrilled if Mendenhall is available at No. 22. Oregon's Jonathan Stewart or Arkansas' Felix Jones could combine with Marion "The Barbarian" Barber to form one of the league's elite one-two punches, too.

Of course, my official advice to Jerry is to get a CB and WR in the first round and grab Texas' Jamaal Charles later to be the Cowboys' change-of-pace back.

How was that convincing?

Is it my imagination or does Tim McMahon get dumber with every word he types?

I wonder what he means by later? I say no earlier than the 3rd round and that is only if they weren't able to land any of the other RBs.

I can't wait for combine coverage to begin.

You and me both. Having the NFLN cover it in detail is one of the best things ever.

Tim McMahon has no respect for his readers if he is going to write some crap like that and expect us to come away thinking D Mac is not the man.

The two best backs are McFadden and Mendenhall I'd be super thrilled with either!

I'd be mroe thrilled with Mendenhall because I don't want to sell the farm to get D-Mac.

No it's not your imagination, but eventually shouldn't he hit a "wall of stupidity".

Actually, quite a few posters on this board have said much the same thing. Are they idiots too? The video is pretty conclusive or does he have to highlight every run that DMac has done? He was right, that linebacker in the video DID almost catch him and his legs DID quit turning as soon as he was hit. Is this coachable? Well the leg turning and the arm carrying is but the speed which is supposed to be his claim to fame isn't. The fact is... he was run down by a linebacker. More and more, i'm becoming a fan of Mendenhall.

LOL. No, it's not conclusive at all.

And the Ali Highsmith bit was hilarious. Highsmith is smaller than McFadden. And when a player is carrying a ball he is not able to swing his arms properly, thus losing speed. The fact is, the video he picked showed McFadden outrunning what will likely be one of the fastest linebackers in this draft.

He's still a linebacker. McFadden as one of the fastest backs should have easily outran him. Now having said that. If he miraculously fell to us, then we would be morons not to take him, but I just don't believe in giving up the house for him. Ya know? If he is gone by the time we pick, then Mendenhall is a very close 2nd and I would be happy to have him. :starspin:

What's your point? Is there some physics law that requires linebackers to be slow? I've seen Ware chase down Reggie Bush and Brian Westbrook from behind.

He did outrun him. Easily. He outran what will likely be the fastest linebacker in the draft, despite not being able to use his arms.

Never mind. I just think he should be faster and stronger for all the hype is all. I'm sure that linebacker is fast but my head hurts too much to argue any more :D Have a good day theogt :D

that linebacker dove at mcfadden and wouldn't have even made the tackle anyways. watch it again the block wasn't even necessary.
