Miles Austin visits Jets; no offer expected

Miles Austin visited the Jets today and left without getting a contract offer.

Now this doesn't mean he won't get one. The Jets are thinking about what type of offer to extend to Austin, a restricted free agent, and if it does happen it has to occur by April 17.

Should the Jets submit a contract to Austin, the Cowboys have one week to match the deal or receive a second-round draft pick from the Jets.

The Cowboys currently have 11 draft picks.

"This is where I started," Austin said to Timmy Mac on Wednesday before visiting the Jets. "There's a connection to Dallas obviously. You also want to be somewhere they want you, and I think [the Cowboys] do."

The Cowboys are very high on Austin. I would suspect he would compete with Patrick Crayton for the No. 2 wide out spot in training camp.

New York Jets visit with Dallas Cowboys WR Miles Austin
by Dave Hutchinson/The Star-Ledger
Friday April 10, 2009, 7:51 PM

Dallas Cowboys restricted free agent wide receiver Miles Austin visited the Jets Friday contrary to an earlier report.

The Jets didn't sign Austin, a former Monmouth University star, to an offer sheet but the meeting went well and the Jets told Austin that they plan to put together one in the coming days, according to a person with knowledge of the talks.

If the Cowboys doesn't match the offer, they would receive a second-round pick from the Jets as compensation. Dallas has extended a one-year, $1.54 million tender offer to Austin.

Although the restricted free agent signing period ends on April 17th, the Jets can sign Austin to an offer sheet anytime before then and the Cowboys will then have seven days from that point to match the offer.

While the Jets clearly like Austin, they are said to be hesitant about parting with a second-round pick, which would be 52nd overall. Austin, however, appears to be as good or better than any receiver the Jets could get in the second round.

Last season, Austin, 6-foot-3, 216 pounds, had 13 catches for 278 yards (21.4-yard average) and three touchdowns. The fourth-year pro also averaged 21.5 yards on 29 kickoff returns.

It's unclear if Austin, a Garfield High grad, left the area. The New Jersey native may visit with his family over the holiday weekend.

Sounds like he will at least get an offer from them.

The hand wringing will make your skin hurt.

I will gladly take the 2nd round pick for Austin. He is a nice player, but I don't see what everyone in the Cowboys front office sees in him...We have Witten, Bennett and Williams, and honestly, I would put Felix in the slot on some plays and dare them to put a LB on him in coverage...

If he stays or go, I'm fine with either scenario. I don't think the success or failure of this team hangs on Miles Austin remaining a Cowboy is the slightest.

That said, I'm excited to see what he does next year if he stays.

Good point. I don't think this team's success hinges on Miles Austin. I guess it's just my curiousity finding out about this guy after 3 years. He's finally got a chance!

If this doesn't tell you something about the WRs Dallas will be looking at, in the second round (51), I don't know what will.

The Jets don't want Brian Robiskie.

Hmm. I wonder why.

If he leaves we'll have the slowest offense in the NFL!

Wallace is being compared to Heyward-Bey in terms of the things he can do. You can't teach speed. Heyward-Bey is a raw route runner, too.

If you can't draft Heyward-Bey, Wallace would be the guy to look at, imo.

Jets can put any offer they want. Unless Miles signs it, it's useless. Miles can choose to just let JJ come up with Cowboys offer and not have to swallow any poison clause.

If he goes, I hope the Cowboys don't panic and take a WR in round 2 when other guys should have better value and meets some needs.

You could get a safety and a pass rusher or a pass rusher and a rotational NT, ect...

Also, Patrick Crayton isn't as effective on the outside. He does the bulk of his damage inside.

I would address WR later in the draft, and I liked DeSean Jackson last year in round 1.

Won't get an offer like I said. He'll be back. Jump all over me now like you guys did then when I said he woudn't. Bring up Tony Romo and Jason Garrett now too. Eventhough they have nothing to do wth this.

While you guys cry over this post I'm going out and seeing some nice looking 10 +'s.
