LOUIS DeLUCA / DMN

NT Jay Ratliff's relentless drive played a major role in earning the former seventh-round pick an $8 million signing bonus. Don't expect his motor to slow down just because his bank account has added a zero.

"Matter of fact, it makes me hungrier," Ratliff said during a break from teaching high school players swim and rip moves at a Reebok STACK Elite Tour clinic Thursday evening. "I came in with a chip on my shoulder, trying to prove that I belong in this league. Now it's pretty much the same thing, but I'm trying to prove that [the contract] wasn't a mistake."

The 6-4, 298-pound Ratliff, who moved from DE when Jason Ferguson went down with a season-ending injury in the opener, doesn't have a prototypical frame for a 3-4 nose tackle. But he's a good fit in Wade Phillips' one-gap scheme, which requires linemen to use their quickness to disrupt plays instead of simply occupying blockers. That was clear before Tank Johnson played a down for Dallas.

The proof is in Ratliff's performance. He anchored a run defense that ranked sixth in the league, made three sacks and led the team's defensive linemen in QB pressures (15), passes defensed (four) and fumble recoveries (two).

Oh, and he's probably the best nose tackle in the league at dropping back into pass coverage (and the only one who played safety in high school). Crazy as it sounds, Ratliff's ability to cover underneath zones is a valuable tool in Phillips' blitz packages.

Ratliff's combination of athleticism and attitude -- he lives by the motto his minister father hammered into his head: "Whatever your hands find to do, do it with all your might" -- convinced Jerry to ensure that he'd be a key cog in the Cowboys' defense for years.

Becoming a multimillionaire didn't change Ratliff as a person, other than giving him the means to really spoil his two daughters. But it did alter his motivation.

He's answered the questions about whether he could play in the NFL. Now he's determined to prove that it wasn't a fluke.

Ratliff clearly has been one of the most pleasant surprises for the Cowboys. He had a very good season last year and I'm looking for bigger and better things from him this year

Easily one of the best day 2 draft picks this decade.

Who doesn't like Rat?

That's a great picture of him. Would make a good background here.

You've got to love this guy. His motor never stops and he's just impressive. What a Draft that was for this Defense. Wow.

Ratliff is one of my favorite players for sure. He just goes nonstop, and the funny thing is, if he elevates his game a little more from last year he's going to go from

"Undersized for NT but fits well in the scheme"

to

"One of the most disruptive NTs in the game."

I sure hope he does it too.

Move him back to DE, let Tank start at NT and let Spears be the backup/rotational DT since he is better against the run.

Ellis, Ware, Rat and Canty on the edges and Bradie, Zach and Tank in the middle.

Any opposing offensive line is overmatched somewhere at some time.

May even allow Roy to find a hole to get in there on a blitz on an early down for a sack and hopefully forced fumble. Should even allow him to shoot some gaps and take down a RB for a TFL.

Disagree -- Ratliff did very well at NT last year. Keep him in the spot where he performed best

...to DE.

How did this guy grade out in college at that position?

He seems to have shown very well during his time with the Cowboys, but is DE a realistic spot for him?

Does he have superior speed and pass rush moves form the edge?

He performed well at DE too.

I think he wore down by the end of the seaon at NT last season and that hurt the defense.

I think he could come up with 7-10 sacks from the DE spot and also can save some wear and tear by not going up against a Guard/Center combo as much. Plus that's 7-10 more sacks than Spears is getting at DE.

If we didn't have Tank I would agree with leaving him at NT by the way.

For the first time since the Boys have went to the 3-4 under BP, this is the best 1 ..2 tandom ever. Ratliff and Tank Johnson both should have and I believe will a monster season. There would be no rest for the other team's inside 3 linemen.

I have no problem with him playing some DE and taking snaps from Spears -- however, I don't ever believe that solutions requiring moving 2 guys is ever best. You move Rat to DE and Spears to NT.... to much switcheroo -- that stuff rarely works out

WOW Just WOW! This just goes to show how good our D could and perhaps will be. You left out SPENCER and HATCHER. I'm confident they rank 2nd and 3rd most valuable front 7 players on the team by years end.

The Rattler reminds me somewhat of a former Cowboy lineman named Larry Cole.

Tough, gritty, and makes key plays - many of which is noticed only by the coaching staff.
