They should remove the entire sign and place it on top. It hangs down a good 10-15 feet below the board and is what the Titans punter struck. Removing it removes all doubt to me.

Roger Goodell ruled last week that the 60-yard big screens at JerryWorld would stay 90 feet above the field this season, but it sounds like the league will push the raise the digital boards next season.

Ray Anderson, the league's vice president of operations, told reporters in New York today that the league did a poor job researching the issue before establishing 85 feet as the minimum height. More extensive research has since been done.

"Prior to that the research was very inexact," Anderson said, per Pro Football Talk. "It was a guesstimate. And we as a department, we came to the conclusion that 85 feet was appropriate. That was a mistake on our part. At the end of the day, there was a lack of communication. But if we see a rule . . . that needs tweaking (we must move on it)."

There will be one minor change to the Jerrytron before the home opener. The Cowboys have reportedly agreed to move a Mitsubishi ad from the base of the digital board.

NFL admits faulty research led to scoreboard issue
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on September 3, 2009 5:13 PM ET

NFL Vice President of Operations Ray Anderson admitted the league's culpability in the Dallas Cowboys scoreboard fiasco Thursday.

He says the league didn't do an appropriate job researching the minimum height required of the scoreboard to avoid becoming a nuisance. The league has conducted more comprehensive researched recently.

"Prior to that the research was very inexact," Anderson told PFT's Tom Curran and others in New York Thursday. "It was a guesstimate. And we as a department, we came to the conclusion that 85 feet was appropriate. That was a mistake on our part. At the end of the day, there was a lack of communication. But if we see a rule . . . that needs tweaking (we must move on it)."

Some change is coming. Jerry Jones will move a Mitsubishi ad at the base of the scoreboard by the home opener in an effort to help fix the problem.

Talking about the scoreboard, Roger Goodell said the "Integrity of game is paramount," but there were also concerns about engineering and safety.

I didn't see all of Total Access tonight. Anyone know if they was covered? Somehow I doubt it was the lead story like it was a couple of weeks ago when everyone was poking fun at Jerry.

The whole JerryWorld JerryTron stupidness is grating on my nerves.

I love how the NFL owns up to it after they let the Cowboys take the heat for it. And I'm sure their owning up will get glossed over. It's not as much fun that way.

If that's the case, the NFL should pay to have the board raised.

I'm guessing when they created the 85 foot rule, they had not taken into account the possibility of a 60 yard long by 15 yard wide TV.

Yes. Another videoboard thread.
Cowboys must remove advertisements on video board

MINNEAPOLIS – The Cowboys' massive video board can stay. The advertisement attached to it will have to move.

Mitsubishi has two signs that extend below the board. The decision to remove the signs was made after commissioner Roger Goodell and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones discussed the issue over the last few days.

Brett Daniels, the club's director of corporate communications, confirmed the signs will be moved before the Cowboys open the regular season against the Giants on Sept. 20. Daniels said the new location has not been determined.

The video board is positioned 90 feet above the field, five feet above the NFL's approved height. The two signs extend approximately three feet, putting them 87 feet above the surface.

Ray Anderson, the league's vice president of operations, told reporters in New York today that the league did a poor job researching the issue before establishing 85 feet as the minimum height. More extensive research has since been done.

"Prior to that, the research was very inexact," Anderson said. "It was a guesstimate. And we as a department, we came to the conclusion that 85 feet was appropriate. That was a mistake on our part."

But the only thing they had to do was go in the archives and watch some punting plays....

How hard was that?

So they move the signs to the top of the board.

Truth be told, I think Jerry is handling all of this quite well.

why must ads be removed

It's probably because Jones' argument is that the entire videoboard itself is five feet above league approved specs. The league's counter-argument is that the Mitsubishi Electric signs are not components of the videoboard and should not be viewed as a point of contention by Jones. Repositioning the signs are a good compromise between both parties for 2009. The only 'victim' which can be connected to the repositioning of the signs is the videoboard's manufacturer, Mitsubishi. They will lose out of a prime location in relation to where fans will train their eyes whenever they look at the thing. They're probably not too pleased about this decision.
