NFL to Jerry Jones: Play was not reviewable

On his weekly radio show on The Fan, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said the league office called Monday to tell him the booth replay of whether Jason Campbell stepped out of bounds before throwing the ball away in the second quarter Sunday never should have taken place.

Jones said the officials were given a memo within the last month about such a circumstance. I've sent an e-mail to the league to seek more clarification.

"It's just not reviewable from the very beginning so they got to kick a field goal 15 yards closer (actually five) and it could have been really meaningful," Jones said. "As it turned out they missed it but still the play was not reviewable by rule. They just screwed that up."

The play was initially ruled a sack for Anthony Spencer. The Commanders were called for a delay of game penalty and then referee Alberto Riveron was buzzed by the replay officials for a review. Riveron overturned the call, saying Campbell flipped it away before stepping out of bounds and was going to put the ball at the Dallas 25 because of the delay of game penalty. That's when a call came to the field once more - possibly from the NFL office? - that the ball has to be put back at the original line of scrimmage because the delay of game never happened.

Coach Wade Phillips argued it should have been intentional grounding because Campbell's pass never cleared the line of scrimmage.

"I know our national announcers had communication with the league office and said it was not reviewable," Jones said. "We've got to get going where there's communication between New York and the games."

Its okay. We have taken a few on the chin from the officials over the last two weeks.

But we won the game on an illegal play, so there is no use in complaining about the officials.

What illegal play? The game was not broadcast here, and the stream I saw never showed any replay it? Please expound:eek::

Is there anyone out there who fully understands the rules nowadays? I mean, cmon, as a replay official you have to know what plays are reviewable. If not, something is seriously wrong. And it can't be the officials if stuff like that happens every week.

And the other question is, why can't that be reviewed? I think it was the right thing to reverse that call. As it would've been the right call to reverse that Felix fumble recovery.

on the game winning touchdown we had two players illegaly downfield, right in front of the official and he didnt call it.

Kosier and Gurode.

We have been screwed multiple times this year by the officials, we finally got one our way..at the most critical time.

Thanks, I guess thems the breaks. Sometimes they go our way sometimes they don't.;)

Wade is right, even if you claim that he got rid of the ball before stepping out of bounds that does not change the fact the ball never made to the line of scrimmage.

Hmmmm, what to do ............ take part in a national protest of the NFL due to officiating problems or drink my beer, eat my Cheetos and watch the game?

I guess I better run out and get more beer and Cheetos.

One day, M. Night Shyamalan will make a movie about football officiating in the 21st century. Referees will review it and give it two thumbs down--which would automatically mean that he finally got around to making a good movie for the first time in years.

What part is NOT reviewable? The play itself or the fact that it was called in after the delay of game?

I think everyone knew it wasn't reviewable except for the refs. And the fact that they got a call from the booth letting them know that they had to take away the delay of game penalty as well but no call saying they shouldn't have reviewed it in the first place is complete bull ****.

You should probably look up the rule with how many yards they are allowed past the LOS, and the rules on when a QB scrambles..

so as i understand it, the play after the penalty was called, should have never been viewed after the penalty was called and then the booth called for a review after the penalty on the Commanders for delay of game;

see the stickler on this, the refs were given a memo on that same type of play before the game and the refs still blew the call

That is wrong. Over on the Commanders forum (not exactly the most objective bunch) someone has posted up the full rules regarding that call. Kosier was engaged with a defender and the other guy wasn't moving after he lost his block.

Both of those things are legal, so no illegal man downfield.

Ok. They were over 3 yards down field.

what does the rule state? I am not sure. I am assuming from where I got it from 3 yards is the rule.

LOL

I had a good laugh on that one. Your right M. Night Shyamalan's movies of late have been real stinkers. I swore to myself I would never watch another one of his movies after watching "The Happening".

That movie was horrible and wow did the previews mislead you?
