There is no competition for the starting job opposite of Roy Williams, according to receivers coach Ray Sherman.

It's Patrick Crayton's job.

That's no knock on Miles Austin, the speed threat many thought would challenge Crayton for the role. Austin is off to a good start in camp, but Sherman believes that the more experienced, consistent Crayton has earned the right to start.

"Patrick is the guy right now," Sherman said. "Patrick is having a very good camp, and I think the guys are really in tune. They don't care about who starts. The only thing we want to do is be productive and help this team get to where we want to go, and that's basically where the focus is now."

Let the best man start. Miles puts you in a better position to win and hold onto a catch.

If Austin begins to make plays consistently during the season, then he may beat out Crayton.

But he'll have to prove it under real game conditions....not in practice. We know we can count on Crayton in a real game.

you wont convince many people, myself included that Austin has better hands than PC. I like Austin more than Crayton as well, However, if the coaches feel we are better off with Crayton starting and Austin at #3, so be it.

Dropped catches in playoffs are remembered more, than many ordinary catches made, i guess.

Patrick Crayton has made a lot of big plays for the Cowboys. I think he is a good receiver. I don't think he is alone in playoff failures. I think he is often the scapegoat for fans who want all the blame to go to him.

I think the problem will be if the defense comes up for the run because they don't respect the outside speed. Thats why Austin needs to be the starter imo. His speed would also open up the rest of the field. I hope this isn't another Ellis/Spencer type progress stopper.

That's pretty disappointing. I guess it's going to take Austin just blowing it up in game for several weeks to make them realize how much better he is. It's just a matter of "when" not "if."

I agree that Austin is much more explosive, and I think it would be a good thing to go for the guy who represents the greater potential.

And how many catches does Austin have in the playoffs? Zero.

I'm not sure that's really a worthwhile argument to make given that last year was the year that Miles began to take on significant playing time and we didn't make the playoffs.

no one cares if we made the playoffs or not...we still expect Austin to produce in the playoffs, whether we make it or not! If he wants to be elite, he will make it happen...lol

"Patrick is the guy right now," Sherman said.

Boo.

I'm a fan of Patrick Crayton, but there is no need for Ray Sherman to make such a statement less than a week into training camp.

Just let the receivers play, if they are all OK with however it eventually shakes out, don't put these type of quotes out in the media.

All three are going to play a lot if healthy.

No big deal.

Just look at Sherman's comments, he said "He is our guy right now"

I felt the Offense was alot smoother when Miles Austin was on the field last year.

Patrick Crayton has made some big plays, like the game winning TD catch against the Commanders (The skins thought they had that one too) but he had the dissappointing Playoff performance where he dropped some passes and based on your view of the Youtube video, he may have even stopped when Tony Romo threw him a pass.

Like someone said, you are always going to be remembered for what you do in big games and even Patrick Crayton will probably tell you he would like to redeem himself.

I really believe we will have injuries at the receiver. Injuries, coupled with the fact that Terrell Owens isn't here, means Miles Austin will get his chance.

The only problem I would have with a statement like this would be if Sherman wasn't even open to the idea of Austin beating Crayton out fair and square.

I like Crayton but he doesn't strike fear into DB's... I think once Miles gets it going he'll end up the #2 WR.
