It doesn't have to be dirty, sneaky or underhanded...the info is out there if you just know how to look for it and that is why the people in scouting department are professionals.
In talking to teams on draft day, sometimes teams send out false information and sometimes they tip their hands.
How else do the 49ers know the Cowboys are targeting Jerry Rice enough to jump in front of Dallas to draft them?
You're correct. Teams float so much information out there that it's a matter of putting the pieces together. And you're right about the agents. You don't think the agents are talking to teams saying, "Look, my guy got a call from the Cowboys, who are interested in taking him in the fourth round. You may want to pull the trigger in the third."
It's all part of the game.
