Draft guru Rick Gosselin gave the Cowboys a C in his grading of the draft. His quick Cowboys thoughts on what they did overall:
After inexplicably opting out of the first day, the Cowboys finished strong with some solid second-day selections. Brewster gives the Cowboys insurance at guard and tackle. Hamlin, Mickens and Smith bolster the secondary.
Gosselin's top grade went to the Houston Texans, who got an A+. Here's how he graded the rest of the NFC East:

Philadelphia: B
NY Giants: B
Washington: D

BTW, some folks didn't like the Cowboys draft at all. USA Today gave Dallas a D+. Here's a look:
No primo picks after last year's deal for WR Roy Williams, then had 12 choices on Sunday. Not a team with a ton of holes, though. LB Jason Williams does everything at top speed, including making mistakes. But he brings athleticism and hustle on every snap. OT Robert Brewster is big (6-4, 325) but a little short on strength and power. QB Stephen McGee could be a find in the fourth round. Career at Texas A&M derailed by coaching change and injury. Grabbed a couple of DEs in fourth round to offset loss of Chris Canty.
How would you grade the Cowboys' efforts at the draft?

C is probably the best grade they'll get out of this mess of a draft. Except from the legion of homers on this board.

Its a shame when your two 7th rounders were the best picks your draft.

I feel like we drafted 8 7th rounders yesterday....

Weird how many Dallas Cowboys homers are on this board, huh? Wish there was a board someplace for people who didn't like the Cowboys so much.

It's nice to know that there are so many talent evaluators out there in media land. Jerry should fire all his scouts, since they have no clue even though this is their job 24-7 -- 365 days of the year, and plan his draft off what Goose, McShay, Clayton, and the other experts have to say.

Since the picks were drafted for development and some early ST how in the hell could anyone grade the draft?

This team needed to churn the bottom of the roster and bring in young players they can develop. What exactly is the issue?

Jimmy Johnson had a zillion picks and basically did the samething when he rebuilt Dallas and a lot the lower choices were the ones the made the core of the team.

That shows you how much they know.

Seriously, how hard is it to know this stuff?

I agree with this statement. Given where Dallas was picking and the fact this was not the best draft to begin with I felt it was at least a passing grade. I think some of these picks will be able to learn and provide backup help but I doubt any are ready to take over starting position on day 1.

A C by Gosselin? Wow, that seems really generous. I wonder if today is his B-day or something.

What's it going to be then, eh?

This isn't much like Johnson's drafts at all. His special teams were primarily comprised of veterans (Vinson Smith, Hellestrae, Vanderbeek, Fishback, Schwantz, Patterson) who were obtained via trade or Plan B free agency. There were a few like Godfrey Myles, but most were not young rookies. Jones has done this before (the Charlie Williams draft) and it was not successful.

It is risky getting so many young faces in roles where rookie mistakes can be costly. Fortunately, most appear to be seasoned special teams players from college who have some experience (like Hodge, for example). Hopefully the growing pains will be brief.

grading a draft now, is like giving a team a championship immediately after preseason.

college accomplishments and accolades mean diddly squat in the NFL....just look at all the Heisman winners who have sucked the big one over the last 20 years.

You have to wait at least 3 years before you can grade a draft. Then at least you have some idea of how well that class worked. before FA, you could do a 5 year and 10 year grade on the class.

On paper, we may not have had a sexy draft. Yet, on the field, this draft may translate to drastic improvements in STs and Defensive depth.

I will not sugarcoat anything, I was disappointed with several of the picks, cause I wanted other players. I wanted Roy Miller, but he was drafted between our two 3rd....not our fault we missed on him. I wanted Rashad Johnson, Brice McCain, Jason McCourty, Quan Cosby, Lawrence Sidbury.....and we got none of them. We had chances to get all of them, but passed em up.

I do not trust Jerry Jones at all....but I do trust Stephen Jones and Wade Phillips, when it comes to personnel for what they need to accomplish. Wade knows his defense and knows the kinds of players he wants for it.

So while this draft looked pitiful and left us scratching our heads.....let's at least give it 3 years before we totally condemn it.

Another draft analysis that fails to take into consideration that the draft picks also yielded Roy Williams.

This concept that you are only a fan if you are a homer and drink the cool aid is laughable. If people need to be called out, they will be from the top down. The Lebetron article hit it right on the screws.:starspin

Thanks for pointing that out, CL. When you (i.e. the author of the article) reveal that complete lack of understanding in your "evaluation", then you lose 100% credibility. Why on Earth would anyone take you seriously?

Nobody's saying that. We're mocking the fact that some posters are surprised that there are Dallas Cowboy homers on a site called cowboyszone.com.

By all means, validate your Realist Card and take your seat in the corner with the other mouth-breathing paste-eaters. The rest of us may tease you from time to time, or put you on 'ignore' until the team plays well and you get to come back saying things like 'my bad' and 'I'm just happy I was wrong this time.' We'll be happy to have you back.

IMO, to give this draft a grade you HAVE TO SEE HOW RW plays. If he is a true number 1, and goes for 1,300 yards this draft was not a C draft. My main problem is that this team doesn't have that many holes to fill so why the need for some many "average" late round picks? However, it should promote some great competition in camp so maybe it works out.

But it's an interesting double-standard that one group gets to rip the other for not towing the company line.

Case in point.

I take it the 'mouth-breathing paste eaters' are the ones who don't see it your way.

Very intellectual.
