But it's an interesting double-standard that one group gets to rip the other for not towing the company line.

Case in point.

I take it the 'mouth-breathing paste eaters' are the ones who don't see it your way.

Very intellectual.

Pretty much, yeah. Forgive me for wanting a fan site for a contending team to be largely a positive place.

You don't have to be in the mouth-breathing-paste-eater section, stash. The seating is self-assigned. By all means, sit wherever you're comfortable.

You can want that, but this is a place where diverse opinions are welcome...even from homers and paste-eaters. :)

Thanks for pointing that out, CL. When you (i.e. the author of the article) reveal that complete lack of understanding in your "evaluation", then you lose 100% credibility. Why on Earth would anyone take you seriously?

Alot of these people writing these grades are like alot of posters on here. They don't know most of the players out of the top 100 or so and don't know our team and needs. Butler and Williams to replace Canty. Please. Case in point. We added 12 high character, quality hungry players on our team.

I think a C from Goose is pretty good. He's generally pretty hard on our drafts and he likes high picks and big names which we had neither. I thought his grade would have been a D or F. He was the only one I was curious to see.(of the mediots).

That's my point. You can have your opinions and express them freely, just liek anyone else can. But 'wanting' anything beyond that is asking for more than you're entitled.

Thanks for not putting me in with those idiots...

This isn't much like Johnson's drafts at all. His special teams were primarily comprised of veterans (Vinson Smith, Hellestrae, Vanderbeek, Fishback, Schwantz, Patterson) who were obtained via trade or Plan B free agency. There were a few like Godfrey Myles, but most were not young rookies. Jones has done this before (the Charlie Williams draft) and it was not successful.

It is risky getting so many young faces in roles where rookie mistakes can be costly. Fortunately, most appear to be seasoned special teams players from college who have some experience (like Hodge, for example). Hopefully the growing pains will be brief.

I like the fact that Dallas made 12 picks to provide increased competition and stand a better chance of hitting on several of these. But it seems to me that we really took the developmental route with most of the picks, getting guys who have the skills to grow into quality players but probably won't contribute much more than special teams play this year.

I think this speaks to Jerry feeling like we didn't have a "need" in this draft, that we were drafting backups/future starters. I don't mind that approach if it pans out, but you're taking a risk on their development working out.

It feels to me we could have done so much more with what we had, but I guess if half of these picks work out, we should be happy. Most drafts I'd be happy getting six players who can contribute to our team.

norm gave us an F on our trades and a D-/C+ having taken no future starters and zero impact players.

That's really unbelievable.

Do they have monkeys writing this stuff?

Larry Weisman has done this a long time, I think. And this isn't even several years ago when only two or three teams in the league ran the 34. How can he miss that these undersized college DEs will be linebackers for us? It's not a difficult concept to grasp.

I really don't understand. It only take a couple of minutes to peruse a team's website and see what the coaches say about these draftees. I guess it's just good old fashioned laziness.

Charles Robinson - Yahoo
Dallas Cowboys
Picks: LB Jason Williams , OT Robert Brewster , QB Stephen McGee , LB Victor Butler , DE Brandon Williams, CB DeAngelo Smith , S Michael Hamlin , K David Buehler , LB Stephen Hodge , TE John Phillips , CB Mike Mickens , WR Manuel Johnson

Positive: Monster class size addressing multiple needs.

Negative: Secondary wasn’t addressed until fifth round.

Bottom line: C+. No picks in the first two rounds, but Dallas gets a solid grade on sheer size (12 picks). If even half the class makes the team, it adds solid depth. Linebacker Williams plays with some pop, and some personnel men had McGee tabbed as a potential sleeper.

I think a C is probably ballpark. Of course, a real grade doesn't come until three years later, but I think most of us were underwhelmed at some of the picks.

That's what a thought as well, very good grade from him, and Chris Landry, A fromer scout on FSR radio last nite didn't rip us either, even though his co host hates the Cowboys and tired to set him up to rip us.

I'd say C is about right. Its tough to get too much more than that when you don't pick in round one unless your Belicheat.

If Belicheat picked the players we got you would hear comments like. Didn't reach. Late round gems. Excellent scouting department and thats how you build a team...

Exactly.

Well gotta love media bias.

Not saying we didn't reach a few times, but then again in a draft thats viewed as weak is there anything such as a huge reach, other then something like taking a 7th rounder in the 2nd.

WG, I couldn't live on this site as much as I do and not realize that all opinions are welcome, or at least tolerated. That's why you give us 'ignore' privileges. :)

Stash, you're in the 'loyal, generally constructive criticizers' group in my book. No problem with that. By that I mean your posts are thought out, your opinions defensible, and you don't just spew disappointment all the time. That's what the site's for.

Lots of good posters are critical of the team. Some more than others, but it all works out b/c some people are just naturally more critical.

There are other groups on both sides that are reactionary and thoughtless and extreme. The reactionary optimists are a bit annoying, but they mean well and this is a fan site, so I don't generally pick on any of them.

It's the group that comes in daily only to grumble and complain and to poop on anything without thinking it through that I'm always tempted to mix it up with.

Asking anyone from NFL player analysts to draft "experts" to fanboys on a message board to grade a draft after draft day is like asking a blind person from birth to comment on the color red.
