Roger Staubach: Tony Romo is really, really good and will get better

There are a lot of people in the Metroplex who have given up on the idea that Tony Romo can lead the Cowboys to a Super Bowl title.

Roger Staubach, who knows a thing or two about championship quarterbacking, isn't one of them.

"I like Tony a lot," Staubach said during an interview on 105.3 The Fan's Ben & Skin Show.

"He makes things happen. It's a maturing process when you're a quarterback. You know, you've got to take charge. You've got to have responsibility. There are other players who can sure help you with that.

"But Tony is a really, really good quarterback, and I think he's going to get better."

Staubach isn't so sure what to think about T.O. He said he doesn't know T.O. and he restrained from offering an opinion about whether the Cowboys would be better off without their No. 1 WR.

How would Tom Landry have handled T.O.?

"It would have been interesting," Staubach said. "I think with what happened in San Francisco and Philadelphia, I'm not sure he would have had that problem."

I love hearing guys like Staubach. We need more of those types around. Dan Reeves is a start.

I think that's pretty much the best confidence-builder Tony Romo could ever hope to hear/read in regards to football.

There just isn't anyone I, as a Cowboys fan, could wish to hear those thoughts from than Roger Staubach.

The anti-Romo people should take note of these comments.

Its true he will get better. Its laughable when i look back and see guys like Henson Hutchinson and Quincy Carter ahead of him on the depth chart a few years back.

I'm not anti-Romo, but I've been very critical of him lately

I just hope he matures more like Roger says he needs to do

Sheesh. Not to pick nits, but he doesn't say Tony needs to improve. He says he's a really, really good QB, and that he's going to get better as he matures. There's a big difference there.

FWIW, Galloway had Archie Manning on for a minute on his show today and he said the same thing. Said he really likes Romo and thinks he has a lot of ability and knows how to win. He even said he has good coaching. He said they just have to get this locker room cleaned up and keep putting good players around Tony, and he'll be fine.

did I say he needs to improve? I'm pretty sure I said he needs to continue to mature

How can anyone "not like" Tony Romo? He has a down year with a 90+ QB rating, when most other QBs can't sniff a 90 QB rating. The guy's amazing and one of the top 5 QBs in the league. At his best, he's top 3 and can do things the other top 3 simply can't.

Seriously, anybody who wants someone other than Tony as our QB is ********.

I've been very clear where I come out on this deal, but I agree so much with the talk about getting the locker room cleaned up.

I think this TO situation is a burden to Tony more than anyone.

Translation: Staubach oesn't want to say.

I promise you he knows what to think.

:hammer: hey, is this agreeing thing going to become a habit?

or is this just a long line of strange coincidences? just let me know when it stops

Does taking note somehow erase a couple of turnovers?

Check that. Perhaps you were trying to say Tony'd mature, but not necessarily improve.

For clarity's sake, Roger didn't say Tony 'needed' to to anything. He said he was really, really good already, and that he'd likely get even better.

Sure..it also adds the plays that are made which other QB's cannot as Roger pointed out.

Doesn't his opinion carry a little more weight and credibility to you?

Well, if you agree with theogt on that post, then I'm just arguing semantics with you. I'll stop.

FYI: Big Ben had as many lost fumbles and more INT's than Romo this year.

well he's talking about Romo, and saying that playing QB is a maturing process

unless you believe that Romo is already mature as a QB?

Romo needs a strong coach who can be strict with his turnovers...someone who can help him mature...he still has the talent...he can get better

How many former players/coaches and analysts have to point out the problem areas to this organization.

Let romo be in a position to be a leader and he will be one.

Keep 81 around and he will always be the guy off the bench who needs to feed the hall of famer.

IF the locker room is fixed the guys will start leaning on the people they should. If not, we will get more I cant throw it and catch it and locker room fights.
